Foundation Fieldbus Signal Distance

01/13/2014 1:33 PM

I could understand that the FF segment maximum length (sum of spur + trunk cable length) should be less than 1900 for Type A cable. In a recent interview I was asked if Is it possible to connect an instrument which is more than 1900 m away ? How we can I connect an instrument which is more than 1900 meters away. Is it possible ? If so please guide me.

Of course it is. Additional or alternative equipment and materials may be needed. The purpose of the question is to understand how the interviewee thinks.

Google amplifier/repeater.

What was your answer?

A check of Samson's Foundation Fieldbus guide shows that FF supports up to 4 segment repeaters.

If I'd gotten that question in an interview, I'd open my laptop while saying, "I don't recall how many repeaters FF supports, but let me look that up for you. Is your entire plant Foundation Fieldbus?"

By using signal amplifiers spaced at 1900m intervals.

With FF the limit is 4 x 1900 = 7600m if the conductor size is correct and the cable conforms to ISA & IEEE standards.

At distances more than 7600m the circuit experiences signal strength loss and resolution issues that increase with added distance.
