By an oscilloscope, maybe; it keeps moving in rotation.

That's exactly the point.

On an oscilloscope, this would show as three sine curves separated by 120°. Whenever the trace is below zero, current can be considered as returning through each phase in succession.

The beauty of polyphase current.

Regard everything under the base line as the return path.

Sorry, I can't see yellow on my PC hence the odd coulors.

if it is star connected, the return is through the neutral; if delta, it is among all the three phases depending upon the time period of the cycle and depending upon the instantaneous current path.

I am reminded of a question asked by a participant in one of my training programmes. I was asked that if current, in fact, returns thro the neutral (assuming the single phase loads in his house) back to the source, why the hell, should we pay to the utility company. He said 'I received, say 10 Amperes through the phase wire and instantly had returned the same 10 Amperes through the neutral back to the utility company. Then why should I pay?' Good question, huh!

When you look at the 3 phase current at any time , you will see that the sum of the three phases add up to zero,You will be able to establish the return current from that.
