High Pitch Tone Coming from My Dogs Right Ear

01/20/2014 4:52 PM

We have a small female Jack Russell terrier. When I put either of my ears next to her right ear, I can hear a quiet high pitched sound like that you get from a switching power supply or a CRT monitor or flyback driver. It is constant, the frequency doesn't vary and it never stops. My mum can also hear the sound and a microphone on my computer was able to pick it up also. It has been like this for over a year. The dog is around 7 years old and seems in great health.

That's odd. They normally go "yap, yap". How strange...

She has "otoacoustic emissions". It's not too bothersome to dogs, I hear. (Pardon the pun)

I have that also. In both ears. Now about 2000 Hz, but sometimes it changes tonality. I have about the same relative age as your dog.

My dogs are all dead.

My ears ring at about 6 KHz.

I can't hear anything above about 8 KHz.

thanks for the link. It might be the speakers of your computer that fail also or if not perhaps you had too much sex? (sex makes deaf)

No, not the speakers.

The 9 and 8 year old kids came out of their bedroom to ask what the 10 kHz tone was.

I put ear buds in after that. Still the same. 40-8,000 Hz.

Not the sex either.

Well that sucks.

My headphones drop out below 25 and my ears top out at 17,250. (Or is that just where my audio driver cuts off?)

Not bad considering I grew up on a farm and have by all standards abused my hearing to no end.

That's pretty interesting.

I wonder if Otoacoustic emission might allow something akin to heterodyne detection, i.e., being able to pick up sounds (that otherwise would be too weak given the small collecting antenna) by emitting a frequency in the expected range and then only needing to be able to detect the much stronger peaks that result from constructive interference?

I also wonder if it has anything to do with tinnitus?

I don't know if it is causative, or correlative, but I've read that people who experience tinnitus often emit a sound similar to the one they are hearing. In effect, they ARE hearing a whistling in their ears, but FROM their ears, and they can't tell the source because they are the source.

My pastor had tinnitus, from his days in the US Army, but I never heard his ear whistling. So perhaps he was not one of those who experience it that way. And from what I read, not all do, and otolaryngologists don't know what it comes from, or what causes it.

The congregation might have looked askance at you and the pastor if you had gotten close enough to him to hear his ear whistling to you.

Point taken. And I don't want to be stoned, by my wife, either!!

It is interesting to note, though, from the same article, that people who have that particular tinnitus also have almost a complete loss of hearing at the frequency they are emitting. Sort of a "Notch Filter" in reverse.

I wonder if anyone has ever experienced that as a "Comb Filter", emitting multiple frequencies. Maybe their tinnitus sings in harmony.

Hark. Do I hear the voice of Angels? Nah, it's all in your head!

But, Doc, I don't hear a ringing in my ears. I don't hear much else, either, but that just lets me sleep better at night.

(And during the day, when my wife is trying to tell me things I don't want to hear, but don't tell her.)

Well, according that THAT, my hearing is right in the top 5% or so for my age. I'll take it. Besides, I sing Bass, so the low notes are all that counts, anyway.

It could be that the dog is producing rf signals to other dogs....possibly they are building a worldwide communication network....dognet....

You have an alien android dog that is secretly monitoring you.

Apparently this one has a bad coil in one of its cranial power supplies.

I say tap on its head with a 20 oz hammer a few times and see if the glitch goes away. It works on my wife when see gets buggy. A few good whacks and her whole system shuts down then resets a few minutes later and runs much quieter.

Is it a watch dog? Maybe you're hearing the crystal oscillator that controls the digital counter.

If a pressurized fluid flows through a constricted (or non-constricted) pipe that has flexible walls; would there be a pressure where the walls of the pipe would oscillate or vibrate? Would the frequency of the vibration be dependant upon the radius or length of the pipe?

You have discovered the secret weapon developed by the Scottish Nationalists. Your dog has been fitted with a device that will explode killing all your family if you vote NO in the coming independence referendum.

it could be the sound of spinning water echoing from the kidneys and bladder.

The water enters as H2O and is circulated and converted in a chemical process to be ejected as K9P.

When she starts humming in the other ear, farts and barks all at the same time, you'll have a quartet.

Think of the savings on iTunes downloads.
