Keep it away from any non-stainless steel shelves.

Tape probably is not good. ANY contact with iron compounds will cause rust. Even dust.

In addition to what Lyn has stated, if you're doing any working with the materials, don't use the tools you use on the mild steel materials on the stainless steel. The shear is ok but grinders are not ok.

Good point.

That includes not using a steel wire brush to clean off SS stock.

Use brass or SS brushes/grinders/tools.

....It also depends on how long you would store those materials ....

and handling them in between...

Install oak timbers on your storage shelves if the shelving is the pallet type with the metal lattice used for the surface that the stainless is placed on. Use stainless fasteners to hold them in place.

If the shelves are flat metal shelving, install oak plywood (the type with oak cores), on the flat metal shelving. Again use stainless fasteners to secure the plywood to the flat shelving. The wood will not scratch or damage the stock. The oak is also compatible with the oak with no reactions between the two.

If a timber or sheet gets damaged simply replace it. The flexibility of the wood will also provide less damage to itself than the hard plastic would. The oak "gives" much more than the plastic.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I would suggest you to keep it in between wood and don't use stainless steel or metal as it can create problems like rust.
