Overbase Calcium Sulfonate Prepared In Ecofriendly Diluent?

01/29/2014 3:05 PM

Beside the cost is there a reason why the overbased calcium sulfonate seems to be solely manufactured in mineral oil ?

For exemple, could a fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) or other green diluent could be employed as a diluent in the preparation of overbased calcium sulfonate or it could have some kind of chemical interactions or stability issue ?

Thank's

Francois

You have to be warying of changing this, there is a chemical reaction that will happen.

I believe calcium sulfonate could react with the polymers within the fatty acids

A clarification on my part.

I actually I looked at my notes, and I had done an analyses of calcium chlorides and polymers that were in cleaning solutions,

The polymers in cleaning had a very high reaction to the chlorides…….. with a not too satisfied results in cleaning membranes in ultrafiltration units in the dairy industries.

But if you're using overbased calcium sulfonate as greases,……. Not knowing what final results you are looking for, This is beyond me.

Good luck

If you have to ask, don't try it. If you do try it be sure no one is within 100 yards of you.

You could blow some innocent bystander into oblivion.

Do your own research, arrive at your own conclusions. Otherwise, see above.

How about reading the published Material Safety Data Sheet to see what it says on the topic?

FAME and all other carboxylate esters, especially with lower MW alcohol moieties, are subject to oxidation (accelerated by metallic contaminants) and are reactive to acids and bases, especially in the presence of water. Which means a grease manufactured from this is probably not a good choice for long term stability and contamination resistance.

I am not knowledgeable regarding the chemical info requested but I have used an over base calcium grease on many varied applications with wonderful results. Under water, high heat, corrosive conditions, and extreme pressure. It solved a lot of problems that were evident at a reasonable cost. Only real problem was loss of product due to staff lubricating the hinges of their lunch box on the way out.

".....base calcium grease on many varied applications with wonderful results....."

The link that I had, showed this also, the only draw back I believe was high heat.

But, I was the one that put the notion in that if it was for grease, and that was only a guess. We have yet to hear from the original poster.
