Electrical Power System

02/17/2014 4:12 PM

What is more important part of commercial electrical power system Design.

  1. Safety
  2. Reliability
  3. Flexibility
  4. Maintainability
  5. Efficiency

Is there anything else to keep in mind before design a power distribution plan.

Er, Customer's requirements, perhaps?

Yes True! But, do they now, what are their requirements?

All they know is, it has to be more productive, and safe. As a design engineer, how do you handle such things, and what is the most important part of it that you keep in mind?

There's no such thing as the most important part....It must be done according to code and on budget and on time....Everything that follows must fit into this framework...

Okay! Completely agree, but is there anything else to keep in mind?

What about those facility owners with not so big budget, talking about more efficient design, ignoring regular maintenance and all that. In that case, don't you think safety is compromised?

I think it would be the right time to walk away.

NO!!

Any power distribution (utilities) manager that even hints that they knowingly compromised safety can be opening up the whole corporation to crippling liabilities and rework expenses. Your question has now put a severe black eye on http://www.currentsolutionspc.com. Your writing on another thread clearly shows that at Electrical Engineering Company Delivers Solutions you are a spokesman for this company. Your lack of ability to communicate accurate knowledge of the one of the most hazardous field of engineering makes me seriously wonder about the quality of your program. I question this to the point that I will never use your company and services. Presently I am not comfortable with any resume that crosses my desk with your training program as a reference.

Think before posting.

I might have added Affordability to your 5 original points.

Do not forget that the facility owners you mention are also those who may not pay their bills.

With the exception that I would replace "Reliability" with "Availability", they are all necessary.

These things are all "must haves", the failure to provide any one of them can cost huge chunks of money.

Good design practice takes all these factors (and more!) into consideration. Here is a link to a design guide that you might find very enlightening and useful:

Safety speaks to the liability to be assumed for implementing system.

To a Lawyer this is most important.

Reliability speaks to the comparison to other systems.

To a Salesman this is most important.

Flexibility speaks to the adaptability of the product to changing requirements.

To a Marketing Department, this is the most important.

Maintainability speaks to the cost of upkeep and repairs.

To a Service department, this is the most important.

Efficiency speaks to the user's profit margin.

To an Accountant, this is the most important.

Does it do #1 to 5 with the least complexity ?

To an Engineer, this is usually the most important.

Satisfy all of those people and you will have the best product you can have.

Did not mention shareholders, on purpose.
