1940s Koken Barber Chair Pump

02/22/2014 6:41 AM

I just bought a 1940s Koken Barbers chair and I was trying to get the trim ring off that's at the top of the base where the cylinder meets the base so I can get it re-plated. So I pumped it all the way up, I took the pump out of the base and tried to pull the cylinder from the sleeve because it looks like the cylinder needs to come apart to get that ring off because it won't slide over either end, the top cylinder of the pump would not pull out of the bottom and it got stuck at the top, fully extended, and now I cannot get it to go back down. It won't turn, go up or down. I am thinking that maybe by extending the pump all the way up I might have gotten the brake stuck somehow. I made sure the handle was all the way forward as to release the piston and allow the oil back into the top of the pump when I was trying to get it back down also. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you.

I'm a bit off topic, and will post this as so.

Why are there so many posts about Kokan barber chairs ?

Can somebody please explain. I love all things American, but this completely escapes me.

CR4 is very much American, and most things I eventualy 'get'. What is it with barber chairs ? This is maybe as mad as Brits and their garden sheds.

Give me a reply and I might just relate the conversation I had with my local barber. Too darn funny to add on here.

Probably the same reason as Chevy Cavalier posts. I'm guessing that there was one post in the distant past that was picked up by search engines, so that now if you Google those words, CR4 comes up pretty high in the search results list.

ps- sorry, I forgot to say welcome to CR4 (I hadn't noticed you were a new member). Please excuse my levity and wait for some of the experts to help.

If you look to right of screen you will see the 'search all of cr4' box. Tap in 'Kokan'. CR4 has a huge number of discusions on the topic.

Tsk. Tsk and tut, tut.

It's 'Koken'. Or do you Brits spell that differently, too?

Aside from the fact that CR4 is world renowned for the intelligence, and wit, of its members (which is legend) we have become the dumping ground source of much knowledge on some rare treasures, such as Cavaliers, barber chairs and over-unity machines.

Google lists: About 322 CR4 results (0.32 seconds) when one searches for Koken barber chair repair.

The good Lord only knows how many lost souls have come here in search of enlightenment on their non-running Cavaliers.

Such a reputation cannot be born lightly, so we must trudge onward, safe in the knowledge that we, alone, are the beacon in the night for Cavalier and Koken owners.

bigg beat you to it on the Cavalier thing, but all the rest is also very true.

Do you realize what you've just done ? Every fruitloop who claims to have a fuel-free Cavalier with a Kokan barber chair for a driving seat is now going to arrive at CR4 .

Sorry, OP, no intent to subvert your question. It just sort of happened. With a bit of luck you'll get some serious answers, and can check around CR4 to get more info on Koukan* barber chairs. Wade past the silly answers like mine. A lot of stuff on CR4 has to be taken with a pinch of salt ()

Please try to be a little more specific. Is that the base from the Cavalier, or the Koken?

NHBarber-

Disregard all the negativity and questionable levity. You have a good find. Would have asked my barber but got my hair cut this morning. Besides sports he loves those chairs. He has one on display in his window and one in the shop for customers to get their hair cuts . That one is the one for us oldies to be nostalgic in. I prefer that one and will wait for it. At my age many people don't need haircuts as often as I do. Many of them no longer have their own hair and must take their "rugs" to the dry cleaners.

Sorry, I can't help you much on this one. I know how to use one but not repair one.

Oh, by the way, welcome to CR4. Its the home for extremely interesting engineers scientists and also some interesting people. If you don't fit into those categories don't worry, many others don't either. Some even have a very good sense of humor! It's what you know and not how you got it!

Good Luck, Old Salt

I'd try WD40!

If this does not get you where you want to be you most likley are mechanically stuck!

Post a picture and make a hand drawing to support your description. Where is the break sitting?

Sorry, we should all be experts with barber chairs by now but I have yet to come past one to take it apart and together again!

it is a hydraulic lift. You may find some help at a local hydraulic repair shop.

there are several repair videos on youtube.
