Long ago we used flat belt drives. A reverse rotation could be obtained by giving the belt a 180deg twist.

With more modern belts (sprockets etc) the twist would not work.

To obtain a reverse rotation you now have to use the back side of the belt as well. This can be achieved by using jockey pulleys.

The belt must be designed to enable the flexing in both directions.

I saw it once on a agricultural machine and it looks clumsy.

If I am not mistaken it is used in a VCR as well.

believe it or not, there are a lot of agricultural machines out there that still use dual face belt drive john deere for instance still uses that on their harvesters for driving some of the shakers.

I have also used it on a paper machine paper roll. The roll bearings were mounted on columns, so to replace a conventional belt required dismantling the machine. By using a dual face belt the belt was rapped around the motor pulley, then the "back side" of the belt rapped the pulley on the roll. then returned around an idler. Worked well. If the belt broke we did not have to take apart the machine, just loosen the idler, install the new belt and tighten it up.

We use 9/16" dia round belts in various sizes from 97" to 660" inside circumference for driving 450 and 900 turns in live roller conveyor systems.

We also use double hex drive belts in some slave drive applications. try this link http://www.goodyearep.com/ProductsDetail.aspx?id=3932

Double side classical cross section belts are used on drives having one or more reverse bends where power must be transmitted to or from the belt in both standard and reversing positions.

For small applications we use 1/4" to 3/8" poly round belts to drive sorter diverts and live roller conveyor access gates.

Hope this helps a little.
