Anti-Static Coatings

06/12/2007 8:13 AM

I work in the printing industry, gravure printing in particular. The inks we use are highly flammable and therefore static has become an extreme hazard. I am required to provide a coating over the floor area around the printing presses in order to dissipate static from individuals and equipment. Can someone advise on a product that can do this.

Hello, Veno. I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for anti-static floor coverings? When I hear the term "coatings", I think of things like paint.

Yes, thats correct. It will have to be a painted coating because of the working environment. There are trolleys that have to be used in this area, carrying print cylinders of about 800kg each and ink spillages also occurs at times, so cleaning must also be done easily without distroying the floor. The coating must also be resistant to the ink solvent that is use which is Toluene.

Thanks for the clarification, Veno. If you're looking for suppliers, I'd suggest taking at Industrial Coatings on GlobalSpec. In the Advanced Search box, choose the Features & Industry link and then select the Anti-Static / ESD Control check box. This will return only those suppliers that sell anti-static coatings. You can, of course, limit the list of companies by specifying other criteria, too.

for this application i don't know if you want a "antistatic" or a "conductive" coating?

when our equipment is used in a explosive environment we powder coat it with Tiger Dryloc 09/81760 and use condutive rubber wheels. i honestly don't know if the floor it rolls around on is conductive, but i assume it must be.

No, the floor coating has to be dissipative (I believe that is the correct term)

Anti static matting like they use for computer rooms, grounded easy to place and can be moved easily for clean up.

Hi Veno,

It appears that you have had several good ideas submitted to you regarding your floor coating. While I can't be of much help w/ that issue (other than suggesting that your employees wear proper static dissipating footwear), I thought that perhaps taking a second look at your ink may be of interest.

Are you using acetone in your ink to accelerate the print drying process?

in textile coating we have PU or acrylic with electrostatic decay. these polymers could be use in floor as well. I don't know if you want to try it or to do any work on them please let me know hbenaddi@hotmail.com

You can use the Sikafloor 262 AS or Sikafloor 381 AS. These are antistatic floors that can be applied from 1.5 mm to 2-5 mm. You should contact your local sika provider (www.sika.com) and they can help you with all the information you need.

A little heads up due to the volatility of your envirnonment. I would seriously do some research. Coatings are usually the cheapest route, but they are not the best solution for static disharge problems. What you are trying to do is create a very high resistive path (in the magnitude of 10Mohms) to earth ground, in order to slow the rate of discharge between the 2 potentials. This means, beyond the coating, you still need to have a direct connection to earth in order to dissipate the charge. You might want to talk with someone at 3M. When I was dealing with these issues, I found that they were very helpful in advising companies on the proper paths to take and considering your environment I would not hesitate to contact them first before proceeding.

i think i get what you mean.

We produce conductive mica powder for ESD floor, even we have products for conductive ink. But we don't produce the paint, the conductive powder is a kind of filler material.

Any question welcome to contact me.
