Ultra fine abrasive paper for polishing metal?

what is the finest grade of abrasive paper (+ 1500 grit/ 4 microns) availiable and

where can it be purchased? (for polishing metal)

Typically Wet/dry sheets up to 6000 grit is used in the Auto Body repair. Any hardware store that has auto body repair supplies will carry it.

Another way to polish metal is 0000 steel wool

To get a gloss finish, the best finish is with a buffing wheel with 'jewelers rouge'.

One of the best polishing compounds I've used is Simichrome - works well on all metals and many plastics. Also builds up well in a cloth; I've used several times on a part still in the lathe. Probably not OSHA friendly but very effective!

McMaster-Carr also sells emery cloth up to 2500 grit and ultra-fine crocus cloth that is used for polishing soft metals such as gold. Some of the Scotch-Brite pads work well on harder metals.

We use diamond polishing compounds for high quality finishes. Typically we use 2µm compounds on stainless for a mirror finish.

I purchased a silver polishing cloth that worked better than any abrasive or chemical I have tried for polishing. It made very easy work of a large polishing job.

Beware - silver polishing cloths are treated with a chemical specifically designed to remove silver tarnish. Not sure what exactly this chemical is or how it may affect other metals.

Red rouge polishing cloths may be found at large jeweler's or better yet at a Jewelry Wholesale Supplier. The red rouge is a very very fine polishing agent.

I think my wife bought it from Walmart. That does not mean I in any way advocate shopping there.

What finish are you starting from? Alumina slurry is used to polish metallurgical samples. A .2 micron finish but it is worked down to in stages.

T-Cut liquid can be used with bare metal, as can Brasso (usual disclaimer).
