Trolls at Work

03/09/2014 2:42 PM

I, and many others here, have a policy to never undo someone else's GA vote. I figure if they want to place a vote for someone's answer, that should be their right. If they later decide that they made a mistake, they are within their rights to negate that vote.

Recently, as in today or last night, someone has begun to delete/vote down, undo other people's GA votes.

I doubt that that number of members have changed their minds on votes that were cast weeks ago, but who knows?

I suggest that only the person who votes a response as good should have the power to take that vote away.

Vote the response OT all day long, if you want, but that OT vote should not cancel out the GA vote of another member.

That's just childish and petty.

Even though I don't have that many GA's so this may not carry that much weight...... But ga are great most on a personnel note especially with the metrics used.

There are a lot of posts here in the past about GA's it's metrics, posters and such that rivals G.W.

We all know that GA's are sometimes subjective.

But negating someone else's vote out of spite is just petty.

The number of GA's one has is not the issue. They sometimes have little to do with technical value. Everyone's opinion counts here. Voice it with an OT that doesn't cancel out another member's good vote.

It should be up to the person who made the vote to change it. Let the OT vote tally along side the GA's.

I think that is a good solution. Letting the votes for each tally independently makes sense. 'Off-Topic' is not the polar opposite of 'Good Answer' and so should not negate it.

Others, including me, have complained that GA and OT are incommensurable. The resulting problems have been known for a long time, so it is quaint that they are raised again.

Quite quaint. Maybe this is the first time I've noticed it in the context of trolls wiping out votes.

I'll leave it at that.

That would require a system overhaul. As of now, no one can undo anyone else's vote, but can only contribute to the total.

I don't believe that's correct.

I won't go negate someone's GA vote to prove my point.

In fact we are as facebook : there are only "likes". The best would be to have both "like" and "dislike" so that woud allow the votes as well from those who consider the answer as good as for those who are against it. The option we "off-topic" have is not optimal since an answer can be "on topic" but not good (as it happens many times unfortunately). I think that "off-topic" should be maintained.

In the voting process, you can see how many GA vs. OT votes there already are. Adding a vote does not reduce the votes on the other side; i.e., it does not "undo" anything.

I just erased your GA vote in the Uneven radial clearance of labyrinth seals in multistage centrifugal compressor by simply voting it OT.

Go and look.

This could get so funny that I've kick-started myself with an OT .

There is some malicious voting done, but sometimes I suspect it's just a failure in communication.

I don't see how you could do that, since I didn't vote the GA in the first place.

I should have stated that more clearly. I did not mean that you did something but I couldn't see how. I meant that you did not really do that at all. For one thing, I didn't give any GA vote for you to delete/override/cancel/whatever. And then, even if you tried, there would have shown 5 OT votes. Maybe by now they are there, but they weren't when I previously commented.

My point is, someone gave you a GA. Not me. That was noted at the bottom of the post. Then I cast an OT vote. The tabulation of votes is, indeed 1-1.

But the actual GA vote, at the bottom of the thread has disappeared.

So, no credit for it, but not because the original voter canceled it.

Duh; that feature has been known since time immemorial. I see no problem at all with it.

What we have here, is failure to communicate.

Here, your GA tally is 557. Anyone who wishes to can cast a single OT vote in any one or your threads that has two GA's and your GA total will drop to 556. The voter of one of the two GA's required to give you the 557 total does NOT have to change their GA vote to OT to reduce your total number of GA's to 556.

I just canceled my two undeserved GA's and changed my OT vote to GA in your #6.

the entire subject is moot to me. I agree it invites pernicious abuse and I've been stung before but my life is bigger than votes on a website, so let the juveniles have their fun it doesn't alter my approach

Once again you are correct, recently had a GA of 2 later it became 1.

I have to agree with that....... I do not know what the structure on how the coding is....... But if things are embedded deeply, it like your manager saying,..... "It's just a matter of just pressing a few keys...... That's all." ....... :/

And that would be posted in foolish managers post that appeared here recently.

Re: TROLLS AT WORK.

Some time back I babbled that it might be neat if we could see who voted on any given post. We can click the 'rate' button and see the tally of 'for'/'against'. Surely it can't be that much coding to get it show who cast a vote either way. The Farcebook 'like' button functions much that way.

I couldn't really give a monkeys, but it might inhibit people from either sucking up or trying to shaft somebody for no good reason.

Re: TROLLS AT WORK.

The original intent/explanation of GA's is as an indicator of the value of a members responses.

This has become less obvious as responses of those who can search the web effectively and post the answers without personal knowledge of the subject have come into vogue. But, maybe that's OK since the answer is still good.

I get my fair share of OT votes and as long as the original voter has a change of heart, I'm fine with that.

I'm also fine if things stay the way they are, too. I don't make the rules here, I just complain about them.

Something that bugs me (while we're on the subject), is that having voted a post a "GA" (or indeed "OT"), it's not possible to just wipe it out. A GA can only be converted to an OT, and vice versa.

Edit - one can't see the GA/OT balance of one's own post without first voting (which would be an automatic 5 OTs)
