They're whatever the general says they should be. That is unless you're on a ship. Then it depends on whatever the admiral says.

Removing the jocularity from my point, it all depends on where and how these relays are used. That is exactly why these relays can be adjusted.

Co-Pilot Roger Murdock (to Capt. Oveur): We have clearance, Clarence.

Capt. Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

Dr. Rumack: Captain, these passengers don't have much time. How soon can we land?

Oveur: I can't tell.

Dr. Rumack: You can tell me, I'm a doctor.

Oveur: What I mean is, I don't know.

Dr. Rumack: Well can't you take a guess?

Oveur:...Not for another two hours.

Dr. Rumack: You can't take a guess for another two hours?

Oveur: No what I'm saying is we can't land for another two hours.

Sure! Undervoltage relay shall be set lower than the Overvoltage relay, Overvoltage relay shall be set higher than the Undervoltage relay; Underfrequency relay shall be set lower than the Overfrequency relay, Overfrequency relay shall be set higher than the Underfrequency relay; Reverse Power relay shall be set in the opposite direction of other relays; Differential relay shall be set differently than the other relays; Ground Fault relay shall be set to detect who's at fault; Overcurrent relay shall be set higher than the past relays.

The 4X100 meter relay will require careful baton settings.

What protection relays are you using?

Given your previous questions it would be better and safer to hire a consultant who can analyse your application and provide you with the correct settings. Any opinion (other than the most basic generalisation) we post here is unlikely to be correct due to the complete lack of information.

Totally off topic, I got to use my previous boss's one he used on clients at work last week.

"You can lead a horse to water but you shouldn't be expected to suck on its ass to get it to drink"

It made my point then by the way.

Really helps to put the stops on an argument so you can get your point across if the other person just isn't listening, especially if the other person isn't expecting it from you.

It pays to have all your facts straight thou so you can talk your way out after saying it. Use it only for good my young Padawan.

If it's a recommission, then the settings should be the same as they were before the work leading to the recommission started. What do the original commissioning records say?

Is this complete or you require any accessory or control panel or AVR panel, protections or PLC or any other help. We are specialized in this field. In 2007-08 we did similar services for a 5MW 6.6kV MAN BCC (now ABB) Steam Turbine Generator set bought by Asian Biggest Mushrooms Farm in India.

Friend,

Learn to relax and don't panic.

Humour is better than a box about the ears to demonstrate how vacuous your request for help was.

The recommissioning of a 10.2MW genset is not a minor undertaking. There will be documentation that specifies what the nominal operating parameters should be, aka "what you want", and what permissible deviation from this ideal, aka "what you really don't want" is acceptable for your location and most likely very specifically for the installation that is now in your face.

Big job for a newbie. Enjoy the challenge.

Sumairali, what documentation/records/specs/scope of works/surveys/audits.... do you have? What have you Googled so far? What colour is the turbo encabulator

Where are you?

If you have the correct manuals and operating instructions available, you should not have to ask these questions.

Do you have these manuals and instructions?

Have you read them?

Do you understand then?

Do you have anyone on staff who understands them?

Have you sought professional help?

Have you asked the manufacturer?

What have you done?

No one here can help you unless you give them some useful information, which you have not done, so far.

You won't go wrong if you follow the cardinal rule that the relays should not trip at normal values and must trip at when they reach dangerous levels. You are in the best position to judge hwat are dangerous levels, nobody here can help i think. For example, if the normal voltage is 415V and, if it becomes 430V the situation becomes dangerous, then the relay must trip before 430V, preferably say 420V.

Re: Protection Relay Settings

For Under Voltage, Over voltage, Under Frequency and Over Frequency Protections are set to rating of equipment.

That means look at data sheets of equipment connected.

Assume that Voltage Limit is +/-10% and Frequency is +/-3% (which are normal parameters).

If your protection relays are 2 element, set first element at above limits with time delay as back up and second element at 15% more with time delay of few seconds (Less than 4 to 5 Secs). Best is to see the recovery time of DG Set at block loads. This time delay is to avoid nuisance tripping.

The reverse power relay shall be set at 80% of mechanical efficiency of the Diesel engine. You need Rev Power only if the DG set is synchronized with any other source. If single operation leave it by passed.

Mechanical efficiency means the losses (which is equal to power required to turn the Engine without load), when the Engine is rotated without producing any work - It is mostly friction losses.

Time delay of Rev Power is set to avoid nuisance tripping just after synchronized and can be 10 Sec or more.

If you do not find data above mechanical efficiency of engine - set it at 3% of DG rating 10 Secs.

Generator Earth Fault relay (Restricted Earth Fault relay) shall be set at lowest possible setting and time - normally it is instantaneous relay (max. 20 m secs - 1 cycle for 50HZ). Reason being that probability of Earth Faults is maximum and shall be cut out in minimum of time to avoid any damage.

The DG you are talking appears to be having Neutral grounded through resistance - in this case earth fault is very low and needs accurate CTs (Toroidal CTs at either end to sense fault).

Over current relays are set as a back up to outgoing feeders. That means operating time of O/C relay shall be at least 100 to 120 mSec more than feeder protection.

I do not know which country you are in. I am in India and I supply control synchronizing and protection panels for power plants. Our recent job was in supply installation and commissioning of similar panels for power plant in Sudan for EL Genena and El Fasher Power Plants. You can contact us for any help.

Protection relay settings are dependent on the system design, system condition, and equipment requirements.

Suggest you contract with a competent, systems protection enigneering analyst before proceeding to identify your application needs/requirements.

Failure to do this can and will result in severe equipment damage and/or personal injury possibly death.

It would help to know the equipment manufacturer's telephone number. That would enable some calls to be made for advice (invitation declined).
