What is Special in "Blue" Color ?

03/18/2014 1:22 PM

Am in the field of Textile dyeing and synthetic yarn making. In our industry for judging the dye pick-up evenness, the material (normally fabric) is subject to "test dyeing" and for this purpose always "Blue Color" dye is used which is almost globally accepted. My question is about what is special with "Blue" colour and why other colours like yellow or Red are not used?

Red could be used as well.

In the old color CRT industry pure red was used when de-gaussing a color TV because the human eye is sensitive to small color differences in the red region of the color chart, so it was easier to see if the CRT was properly de-gaussed by displaying an all red screen.

The eye is almost as sensitive to small color differences in the blue as it is in the red, so that's why a pure blue is used in your field. The choice of blue vs red is probably due to some other factor having to do with dye chemistry, availability, or cost.

The eye is much less sensitive to small color differences in green, or in the mixed colors of other parts of the chart.

If we combine the data from posts #2 and #3, i think we have the best answer possible.

How about that there is no expensive mordant needed to fix indigo dye. The blue dyeing process is easy. So time and money.

Maybe it's not special & has just been chosen so that the tests are standardised & comparable across the industry.

Has this got anything to do with the pigment indigo being completely insoluble in water, perhaps?
