How to Build a Light Saber

06/13/2007 7:11 AM

like the title says would it be possible to build a light saber.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be out of light as long as it can be made to slice through every thing. Doesn't have to be with modern technology some good theory's would be fine .

I'd build a heavy one, it'll last longer in the long run.

I thought about it ... and ya need a black hole at the tip of the saber to avoid the beam from reflecting off in any direction a mirror will not so as when ya pirece an object the mirror would shatter a black hole would certainly eat any matter ...

as for using it .. well that my require some stregth wield a tiny black hole as the mass is unknown .. lol

how about nano tube material made ridiculously thin and then heat it till it glows bright ( light saber look) so being so thin and hot and strong it should go through things like cheese wire goes through shall we say cheese. And yes i have read ringworld LOL

Good idea! But the power drain would be enormous. Maybe a heat induced chemical reaction?

GlobalSpec of course. I tried McMaster Carr but no luck there.

Black holes are quite tiny in size and you find them a long way from the earth, they can beas small as 1 cubic centimeter for example, but they have a huge mass.

You may find the sword to be very tiring to swing for long if you add the black hole as suggested.........it will also swallow the whole solar system shortly afterwards too......

Well the classic non-light version would be the molecular filament whip / sword / garrotte idea. This is technically feasible to make now, but would cost a princely sum to manufacture.

Another approaches that is more fiction than science / engineering would be a blade whose "edge" would be a plasma. The body of the blade providing the magnetic field used to create and contain the plasma cutting edge.

Nice. How would you create the plasma? HV Tesla coil or similar wouldn't have any cutting power.

I'd go with a tiny fusion reactor to power a super (duper) conducting magetic containment field for a plasma blade (again, fuled by the fusion reactor). I'd say by the time the fusion reactor tech is advanced enough to build one that small, then so would the plasma and magnetic containment be...

so I guess the crystal idea isn't practical or feasable ? I am wondering on what type of energy you can even focus through a crystal or lens, to even make it / boost / amplify it to such levels, and of course streamline a beam. There are plenty of chemical based laser devices, etc. but to get an effective output in such a small device, it seems difficult. I have no expertise in this field, but it is beyond intriguing.

ok i'm home now. got my dsl in and hispeed and todddy-to-go

You can build a lightsabre by comprising a photonic resonator ( fabry-perot) with a termination/ cancellation en by cancelling the photons at the end of approx 1 metere with a phase shift at the end..

resonating so frequently so as the photons are so highly concentated ahhhh

weel

byenow

im sure this helped-------------;>

If you just want to go around cutting things up, why not get a plasma cutter. At least you can play with it just as long as you don't start cutting up other people's stuff.

If we can get a working model we could use it to build a better mouse trap and maybe make some money out of it.

How about using small wormholes that have their distant ends opened up in the core of a star and another set opened up near a black hole. The proximal ends of the worm holes, the part you are holding and using as a lightsaber, would be facing one another so that the plasma stream would exit from the hilt, the star side, and reenter the tip, the black hole side. Since these are wormholes and do not have mass the weapon could easily be weilded. This would not however give resistance to another lightsaber. A pinpoint energy barrier would have to be used to act as the shaft of the weapon.
