The Upside to Expensive Gas

04/11/2005 12:00 PM

General Motors has reversed course on hybrid vehicles in light of Toyota's recent successes.

The Prius outsold, in no particular order, the big Chevy Suburban sport utility vehicle, the Ford Expedition large SUV, and Toyota's own big Sequoia SUV, whose sales fell 12.5% last month. All those vehicles easily outsold the Prius a year ago.

Strange comparison

04/11/2005 3:44 PM

How is it selling against similarly sized vehicles? Comparing it to the sales of SUVs is apples to oranges.

True, not to mention also the difference in variety in the classes themselves... there are (completely guessing here) probably 50 different vehicles in the SUV arena and only two or three in the hybrid arena. If you compared the totals of the individual classes, I'm sure SUVs are sellling much better than all hybrids combined.

Better Than a Bailout

04/11/2005 3:52 PM

Three cheers for GM if they've figured out there is a market for vehicles that get more than 12 miles to the gallon. High gas prices are a drag, but a Chrysler-style bailout for GM could really get expensive.
