Can You Use Molds with Quartz?

04/06/2014 9:00 AM

Im trying to find the best way to manufacture many small quartz fittings and was wondering if it would be possible to use a mold or if each piece would need to be hand blown?

First question here thanks guys!

I'm not sure if quartz has a malleable "plastic" phase state that glass does. If it does I doubt that it will be around one atmosphere of pressure that a person can hand blow. So molding is probably your best bet but you have a lot of research to do.

No. Not if you mean "Quartz". SiO2.

If you are referring to fused quartz glass, yes.

You imply a very good point here. Quartz is a crystal. Fused quartz is not a crystal. By melting quartz, one has lost the crystal structure and made fused quartz.

It a combination of a cynical, literal mind.

We both know what real quartz is.

Whenever I encounter a new poster, I automatically assume they don't know anything.

Usually works well for me.

Depends on the shape and quantity.....many and fittings is a little vague....water jets are very versatile....

I would probably farm out the work for small quantity....

Here in the UK we try to differentiate the different meanings of the word mold by using spelling. In the US you spell all three definitions m o l d whereas in the UK we spell all three definitions m o u l d. Oops.......

Which is why in injection molding, the mold is normally spelled t o o l, which in British spelling would be t o u o u l, unless I've tossed this joke in a coal pail and walked to Newcastle with it.

(I know, I'm mixing the 'coal to Newcastle' metaphor with the visual pun of 'carrying a joke too far,' it's early in this time zone, and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

I could stir up the spelling debate by throwing in the French touiller

Don't worry about crossed metaphors. With the UK mining industry in such dis-array, Newcastle welcomes any coal it can get.

I have seen a process where quartz was milled to a fine powder then made into slip then cast and fired.
