http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/04/14/russian-jet-passes-at-close-range-over-us-warship-in-black-sea/

Since it was only one plane, I would guess it was just some young "hot shot", trying to make a name for himself.

The Black Sea? That's sorta between Florida and Texas?
Oh no, I remember its the one that borders...

Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia... oh and what's the other one?
Oh yeah, I remember it's Russia.

I expect if there was a Russian Navy ship in the Gulf of Mexico, it might get a bit of a fly by?

Please note I'm no opologist for Russia in the current crisis (they are far too close for comfort). But they are a loooong way from the US's back yard.

Warren said. The jet did not "buzz" the Cook, but "flew too close,"

Oh puhlease!. I expect the pilot was giving them 'funny looks' too

I get your point but any captain will tell you their first responsibility is to protect your ship! multiple attempts to contact the rouge pilot should be made first, maybe even a warning shot, then splash him

I agree. This is international waters so the US has a right to have a ship in the Black Sea but it is a long way from a US port. The Black Sea borders Russia. The Russian Black Sea Fleet has for their primary port the city of Sevastapol Ukraine Crimea Russia Crimea... This is a factor that many continuously overlook in the complicated politics that is happening. The only warm water port the Russian Navy has is in the Black Sea.

PS I hope the CR4 admin moves this political discussion to the breakroom instead of ending this thread.

The US is there only as a projection of power. Again, a common tactic for all militaries. We won't actually do anything except intercept any and all communications in the region.

Somewhere out there is a ship with all kinds of antennas all over it.

Well, not really.

Three Years After the BP Spill, Tar Balls and Oil Sheen ...

Gulf Oil Spill Recovery Could Take Decades For Deep-Sea ..

"You Brits" didn't cause the disaster.Transocean, a Swiss company, and Halliburton, an American company and VP Dick Cheney's old employer, were the major contractors.

Fact is, most of the oil is still on the ocean floor.

Russia is long way from the U.S.' backyard???

Not over the North Pole it isn't, nor the Bering Sea.

If they and us get in a big hurry, it's not far at all - about 20 minutes by ICBM.

Both directions.

All I can say is that I'm damn glad Fredski isn't in-charge.

This is nothing new. There is a long, long history of these types of events. Everyone does this to other militaries all the time.

The only issue here is how the news wants to spin this for drama.

Agreed.

This is nothing new.

A toothless administration can only stand by and hope for some positive spin to be applied. Then, do a little chest pounding.

The worst possible thing we could have done would be take a shot at the plane. As Del, redfred pointed out, we're in their territory, and grossly outnumbered.

GA, Lyn!

I was once taught; "Dis-aggression is the better part of valor at certain times"

and; "It is better to lose the battle and win the war than to win the battle and lose the war."

Knowing where that very fine line exists is the hardest part of an officer's decision and many have lost their lives when the wrong decision was made by an over-zealous "leader".

I personally applaude the commander's patience and grit in this case as it is very volatile in that area and the stress is high.

I have a nephew (retired now) that has been awarded the Bronze Star twice with 6 Oak Leaf clusters for personally de-fusing these types of situations when he worked in the Pentagon therefore avoiding world war 3 with Russia.

He and many other unsung heroes walk among us of which we all owe the utmost respect and appreciation.

In all honesty, what the ^%$# is the US doing there anyway? If it was reversed, which you do anyway, it would be all over the place as bragging rights. So a Russian buzzed a ship. Is it a big deal? A huge ship was under threat from a lone aircraft? I do have my serious doubts.

If anything the pilot was just looking for someone to play with. He was lonely probably and was asking you out to play. If you invite me to come and play with you are you going to blow my home up? Come on Fredski, America is under threat from itself, not the Russian. Go match your F16 against the Suhkoi su35 and leave the big guns at home. Go have some fun and meet new friends.

Re: Russians Buzz US Navy Ship

First, the US ship is there as a projection of US power. While it is not going to engage in military attacks, its presence is designed to make a statement that we are here and we have interests that we want to protect.

Second, the Russian SU-24 was assigned the task to perform flyovers of the USS Donald Cook. This is not some ad hoc spur of the moment decision by some kid in the cockpit. It is also a projection of power and says that we are also here and we can hurt you if we have to.

Third, the idea that this is an extraordinary event is false, just as you have questioned. This has happened far more frequently and aggressively during the Cold War and still happens many more times than is reported in the media.

The only reason we are discussing this at all is because the media has chosen to make this an issue by dramatizing the event.

While the action may be provocative, the SU-24 never flew over the USS Donald Cook and the airspace around it was not filled with US aircraft, so air safety was not compromised. The USS Donald Cook is a destroyer, not an aircraft carrier with active flights coming and going.

Agreed. Of the hundreds of events that happen daily, we read and hear about a handful that have been pre-selected by "somebody". This is evident because whenever an unusual or sensational event is reported, you hear about the same event occurring again multiple times, even though you don't ever recall it in the news before the initial reporting.

A person's estimation of the likelihood of an event is associated with the number of times he hears about it. This estimation is skewed by the selection of "interesting" stories.

Just my OT rant...

red fred was probably right . I could have picked a better spot to post this. when you have a void of leadership it will be noticed by others and eventually exploited, weakness has brought out a bully that's laughing as all of America is getting sand kicked in our face. my frustration is based in an overly passive response to being spit on.

Oh come now Fredski, you are just feeling like your pride is injured, No one has any hard feelings against you. You have the right to speak out. We all take a kick now and then. Here, lets have a few vodkas and get in the swing of things.

You are learning what others have known for years, that the USA does not rule the world nor the seas. The bully has always been America, now he has been challenged by a kid in a Su. I bet that kids feels great right now. A vodka smile from ear to ear. Let him enjoy it. He deserves the joy.

I just read a leaked item from the pentagon: "A squadron of fully armed Flying Fish has just attacked a US naval ship near Crimea. This could be the start of the Cod Liver War"

It is live broadcast on Omega 3 & 6 channels.
