Where does this fall in the energy density graph?

In this case they should use fresnel lenses....still no idea of relative energy density...but very cool tech....

A turntable, elevation control rod, and driver could fix that.

Solar energy could be stored in the form of heat in rocks, water etc and as electricity in batteries and capacitors.

Yes, but with the caveat that the older form of thermal storage has a limited amount of time the storage is available before it dissipates due to non-zero thermal coupling with the environment. Although I also suspect this could be extended to really long useable time if aerogel insulations were utilized somehow.

This new molecular thermal storage is due to a change in steric configuration of the molecules, along with a substrate that "traps" one configuration over the other. The heat can only be released by providing a trigger energy source to induce reversion to the lower energy configuration.
