Energy Meter Running With Neutral Wire

04/18/2014 11:11 PM

Dear all,

We are living in small apartment. It is having 7 houses. All 7 seven house having individual energy meter ( L&T make, 240V, 5-20A, CL-1) and one common disc meter (8th meter) for borewell and varanda light and external lights.

All 8 meters are connected Parallelly, We are facing a problem with 7th energy meter. When bore well motor runs, 7th energy meter also running.. we have removed phase fuse in 7th meter just below the meter. this condition also meter running..

Only meter input wire is connected and output side neutral wire is connected. We have removed phase. But meter consume unit due to borewell motor running.

We have checked neutral to ground voltage in 7th meter it shows 0.4V

After many attempt the problem not yet solved.. We are paying more energy charges for 7th meter.

Kindly post your suggesstion pls

You're looking at the wrong end of the problem. Pull fuses until the well pump stops running, then work your way back to the meter(s) to find out where the crossed connection(s) are. You may be surprised to find that there is an (un)intententional cross/parallel connection in the line and/or neutral wiring for the pump and meter #7 and 8's wiring.

Please clear this up a little.

I think part of what you stated is that meter #7 runs even when the phase fuse is pulled. Is this correct? Is meter #7 running with the only electrical connections to meter #7 being ground and a neutral that measures 0.4 VAC to ground?

Also, RAMconsultant's suggestion of pulling fuses and looking for crossed connections is very good.

Dear SIr,

You said Correct.. After removing phase fuse in 7th meter.. only neutral wire is connected.. Our Borewell meter connected in 8th meter..

Con.1: When motor no run.. 7th meter phase pulled.. Result: Both meter no run.

Condition 2: when motor run.. 7th meter phase pulled or not pulled : Both meter runs.

There is no effect on pulling phase fuse in 7th meter.

Still problem not solved..

Unfortunately you now have to start tracing the physical wiring from the pump all the way back to the meter(s). Somewhere there is a crossing of wires that shouldn't be there.

If this was done deliberately, it may be very hard to find and you will be forced to rewire the pump directly to the correct meter. An RF wire tracer may help you if you are very disciplined, and I wouldn't be surprised if you find a junction box or connection hidden behind some plaster, sheetrock, or in a totally inaccessible location. Been there, seen that.

Just an Idea. Short the neutral to ground and what ever breaker throws, there is your answer.

After 7th, the 8th meter is present.. but numbering not done.. 8th meter is old type (disc meter)

The 8th meter output is connected with fuses( phase and neutral) then it is connected with borewell starter box.

Today i removed 8th meter neutral fuse,, found that 7th meter running very fast..

today neutral to ground voltage 14.5V

How 7th meter running with single neutral wire..???????????

Thanks for the pictures, given the lack of consistent color coding, labeling, randomly taped leads, and pieces of NM cable snaked through the meter pan, you really should consider starting over with a different electrician, and certainly not one that lives in one of those apartments.

If you are wondering why the 7th meter is running with what appears to be only one wire attached to it, it's because it can't, somewhere hidden in that wiring mess is a couple of power resistors that form a current or voltage divider that allows both meters to supply your pump.

I can almost guarantee you that if you remove the supply side connection to either meter #7 or #8, the pump will continue to run. Hopefully it does stop running if you remove the supply to both meters simultaneously, if not then you have an even bigger problem. I suggest that you re-read post #6, then physically trace every piece of wire to and from both of those meters.

Draw the details diagram in Paper and scan it , then post your problem area.
