How do you clean out CMP

06/14/2007 9:17 AM

I have 2 -12" drainage pipes made of CMP that are partially filled with gravel and dirt.

They run under the street approximately 15 feet each .

I'd like to clean out the debris so they flow better. But don't want to hire a sewer cleaning company to clean them out. The street is Private so the city wont do it.

Any suggestions on how I can do this myself without spending too much money.

From what I have seen they use a combined water source hose and a suction hose that shoots out a jet of water and draws the loosened debris into a large container on the back of their truck. This contained has a air exhauster that maintains some degree of vacuum. A truck sized wet vac.

So how do you make a small one to do this? If you have a pressure washer and you make an extension so you can get into the pipe with the high intensity spray you will be able to loosen the muck. Similarly you can use a wet vac to suck out the gravel etc. If you have good access at each end and time to burn it is probably feasible to try this approach.

Guys who clean out septic tanks have the same sort of equipment. They probably have an hourly rate for small tassks like this

If they go under the street, they are not yours. If it is a state or federal highway you can be fined for doing work inside the highway. If that is the case call the state hiway department maintanence.

If it is a local road call the city or county. Keep going up the ladder until you get results. That's one reason you pay taxes, to take care of the public infrastructure, like roads, sewers, storm drainage, etc.

You might want to reread the part of his post where he says that the street is private and the city won't do anything.

If you can get to both ends of the pipe, pass a rope thru and then attach some chains, pull them back & forth to free the sediment, wash it out from the high end with water.......

If there are specific problems with this method, let us know and we will help further.

The chain Idea might just work. Thanks for the idea. I have a couple of tow chains that I can use.

I was thinking about things to drag thru it. One was a bucket but I was afraid it might get stuck and then I'd really have a problem. The chains should work without the chance of it getting stuck.

The other Idea I had was a friend of mine is a fireman. And see if he could borrow a hose and then get permission to check the pressure of the fire hydrant that located in my front yard.

If it does I could send the tape into Americas funniest home videos and make enough money to have the pipe professionally cleaned out.

Maybe I should find out who stole the C$ from the police dept storage facility and use that instead of the black power.
