Delta Transformer

06/15/2007 2:27 PM

Can a Y-delta transformer be short circuited on the delta side for the SC test?

When the 3 windings of the delta side are already connected in a mesh, then why doesn't a circulating current of the fundamental frequency flow in it? Why only triplen harmonics can flow in it?

Draw the phase vectors of the fundamental and the triplen harmonics. You will find that in a Delta winding the fundamental is in a normal positive sequence function and the Triplen harmonics are zero sequence functions and short circuited.

Reference: "sequential components" in your power engineering handbook.

Large values of triplen harmonics can burn up a WYE / DELTA wound power transformer with no abnormal outside metering indications. I have seen some Biguns smoke out.

Snakers.
