I suppose there's nothing especially new here - solar power, generating synthesis gas with the aid of metal oxide catalysts and converting the gas mixture to liquid hydrocarbons. All of which is established technology. We could have done it long ago if it were economically viable. The crux of the matter would seem to be the use of "free" solar power rather than any other source such as nuclear or fossil fuels (clearly stupid). I wonder what the overall yield is.

Production of kerosene on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier would make sense using the nuclear power as an energy source. Perhaps nowadays, to get funding it has to be solar powered.

That's a stupid bit of snide, out of date too, many have been advocating nukes as an answer to the "greenhouse gas" problem.

This was proof of concept only. The amount of kerosene produced was 15ml and the energy required to produce it was way more than it delivered. The whole process would only be carbon neutral if the efficiency (so low that the scientists dodged the question when asked) was higher than will be deliverable in our lifetimes. Never mind.... back to the drawing board.
