Unwanted Tripping of Source Breaker

05/09/2014 6:58 AM

WE HAVE INSTALLED 20 mVA 6.6 kV / 11 kV DELTA-STAR CONNECTED TRANSFORMER IN OUR PLANT. FOR THIS WE HAVE USED FOLLOWING FEEDERS ALONG WITH DETAILS

6.6 kV SOURCE BRK CT RATIO - 1000/1 A, ABB MAKE RET 615 RELAY

11 kV INCOMER CT RATIO - 600/1 A EASUN REYROLLE CSC 211 RELAY

11 kV OUT GOING FEEDER CT RATIO - 400/1 A EASUN REYROLLE CSC 211 RELAY

AFTER INSTALLATION THE SOURCE BREAKER IS TRIPPING ALWAYS FOR EARTH FAULTS IN THE 11 kV FEEDERS.

THE EARTH FAULT RELAY SETTINGS ARE AS BELOW ( In - SEC CURRENT )

MAX LOAD TAKEN AS 4250 kVA for 6.6 kV SOURCE BREAKER - RET 615 HIGH SET E/F -0.2 X In - TIME 50 m sec, LOW SET E/F 0.15 X In - TIME 200 m sec

MAX LOAD TAKEN AS 2500 kVA FOR 11 kV OUT GOING BREAKERS - CSC 211 RELAY HIGH SET E/F -02 X In - TIME 200 m SEC LOW SET E/F 0.45 X In - TIME 175 m SEC

INSPITE OF THIS TIME SETTINGS IN DIFF VALUES THE SOURCE BREAKER IS TRIPPING ALONG WITH THE OUT GOING FEEDER BREAKERS

PLEASE SUGGEST/CLARIFY WHAT IS THE OPTIMUM SETTING TO BE ADOPTED TO AVOID SOURCE BREAKER TRIPPING FOR ANY FAULT IN THE O/G FEEDERS

PLEASE HELP

If you don't want them tripping, then you could rip them out or bypass them! It would be better, though, to investigate and remove the fault that is causing them to trip.

Bypassing the protection device is a violent way to find a fault.

It's also a very good way of preparing nominees for the Darwin Awards. However, if the original poster does not know what to do, asking anonymous stangers and is meddling anyway, it is potentially a worthy ambition, particularly if there is no methodology of establishing valid responses from lairy ones.

At 20MVA a lot of things could remove themselves from site in the event of a fault.

Typing in all capital letters is considered SHOUTING and rude. Please turn your caps lock off.

A breaker is an equipment protection device. It is supposed to trip when a fault happens. That is what they are supposed to do. Clear the Earth faults in your feeders. If the power on surge current is the only thing tripping the breaker then measure your surge current with an oscilloscope and evaluate. You may find that your breaker is faulty and tripping at vastly different levels than their setting. You may find that other faults exist in this new installation.

More information needed to understand problem.

What is resistance of Neutral Grounding Resistor used with Transformer?

Remove the protection and stand back, way back.

Seriously, seek trained, local professional help.

Bye Bye.

Have you actually checked for an earth fault or fault in the control wiring that appear to be causing the relay to trip?

Just because the site is new doesn't mean the installation or equipment are fault-free?

Has the relay been set up correctly and is it the right type?

Let us know what you find.
