Engineered Measles Virus Kills Cancer Cells

My friend lost his wife in blood cancer. Her initial symptoms were incurable fever and finally detected to blood cancer. She had gone through various chemo therapy treatment and torturous medications. They spend millions of $ but she died at young age of 35 years.

this is indeed news...says to me as a humble observer that perhaps cancer cells are somehow bacterial like in behaviour and hence targets for virus attack..

Actually one of the genetic modifications made to the virus was a gene from human thyroid glands that preferentially gloms onto iodine. In that way they can use radioactive iodine as a tracer to see which cells in the body have been infected and where the tumors are via CT scans. This did not "cure" the Myoma. only two recipients got the treatment, one had tumor shrinkage and is still alive but is still terminal, the other passed without showing a lot of improvement. however she did show to have had cells throughout her body take up the iodine gene. so there may be an issue of not generating a high enough initial viral load. This experiment used the highest inital viral load yet of this kind of treatment. the are considering a follow on experiment with an even higher viral load.

Duke University has been working on a brain tumor cure with the Polio Virus for some time. In clinical trials has shown great promise.

Even as a cancer sufferer myself, I worry about a measles virus being used to kill something in my body...what if it gets away? Goes native? Reverts to type? Mind you if the "full fury" chemo quits working the way the 5 FU did, I may well take somebody up on it. At least dying from measles is less painful than dying of cancer.
