99' Cavalier Won't Start With Out Pulling the Accelerator Line Under Hood

05/16/2014 3:16 PM

I tried to start my car today as usual and it would not. I tried in Neutral, while rolling down hill, while it was sitting flat, by giving it some gas, after letting it sit, sitting on a hill, sitting flat, ect. Finally a guy at work pulled a line connected to the accelerator and it started. He felt that the line was not tight enough/it had too much slack. I have never touched this line and it has not had any recent repairs. What is this and should this be replaced or tightened or what????

It should be look at by a junk yard mechanic, who knows how to fix Cavaliers.

Chevy Cavaliers are the biggest piece of junk ever sold to the public. So far they have exhibited over 3,421 separate part failures and faults, no two alike.

No offense, I just found that blue thingy in a T-shirt site and will overuse it for awhile.

Cavaliers are junk, take it to a mechanic, or burn it.

After 15 years there probably isn't much that doesn't need to be repaired or replaced...here's a shot in the dark....

"On the top center of your engine the is a block housing, covering the throttle-body where air/fuel goes in, look just behind this for a small black vacuum line, line is about 6-8 inches long and connects between engine and a small sensor on the firewall, this is the engine's vacuum sensor, on the bottom of the vacuum hose at the throttle-body side(engine side) you might find a small crack in the hose(from heat), trim off the end or replace..."

A line to the accelerator was not tight? That's all that you can say about this mystery line and you think that we can identify it from that!?!

Obviously you cannot tell the difference between a mechanical linkage cable from a vacuum hose, a position sensor signal wire cable, a choke cable or whatever. Your sparse information just barely tells me this is in the engine compartment where the throttle exists. In the passenger compartment is the accelerator pedal.

The best I can do to help you is to tell you that you need a good mechanic in your area. You have a fifteen year old vehicle. You will be seeing this mechanic often.

Good Luck

I am afraid that I will need more to go on than your description. It COULD be the battery cable. Either the positive or the negative. If the cables are not tight, the starter will not engage. Does this sound like what you experienced?
