Is There a Name for this Stepper/Servo Motor?

05/19/2014 12:37 PM

Once upon a time I bought stepper/servo motor where the rotor was on the outside and the stator was on the inside. It was the first one I had ever seen and it really worked very well. Now I need something kind of similar but smaller and I can't find the "magic words" for my search engine.

What I am looking for will work on DC and the mounting attachment will be the double ended shaft that will remain stationary while the "body" rotates.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like a motorized pulley. Van der Graaf are pricey and also Stainless and I don't know if they have DC. You could also try Interoll.

Is there a name for this motor?

Google external rotor motor. I think a lot of fan motors are that way. There must be some advantage to a large moment or inertia.

Someone here suggested the term "Drum" motor. We use motorized rollers on conveyors (the motor is internal) and that comes pretty close. Knowing the manufacturer of that device, I tried a few magic words in the search engines for that thing and came up empty.

Hmmmm, not only is the internet not always up to date, its search engines fail if you don't have the right "magic words" (keywords).

Looking for something like the outrunner brushless motors used in modeling? They do need a special controller to drive them from DC (they are actually 3-phase synchronous motors) but can have amazing power to size ratio due to use of rare-earth magnets. S.M.

Yes there is, it's known as an IOS motor, IOS stands for (drum roll) Inside Out Stepper. Here's a link to get you going...

I don't know why I would be getting this warning about what I am presuming is a motor site?

Because your presumption is incorrect. You were on a blog, and blogs are notorious for having content, links, and graphics with questionable origins/destinations.

I didn't allow the connection and so I didn't know what kind of site it was.

The simplest example is the ceiling fan, which you see every day in homes worldwide.

The OP asked for a stepper motor, not a fan. A fan runs all the time, not in STEPS!

And I'm pretty sure (not 100%, mind you, but pretty sure) that a ceiling fan is not going to fit in whatever the OP has in mind to build. If it did, he or she would need some kind of transmission with an electro/hydraulic clutch to transform the constant rotation of the ceiling fan into STEPS. Then you end up running into all kinds of other problems. A stepper motor (what the OP asked for to begin with) would probably be a better solution.

I compared with the Van De Graff motor used in belt conveyor

My guess is that they are uncommon because a key characteristic of a stepper motor is response time. An external rotor would have a high moment of inertia and hence a more sluggish response.

can you send a drawing of mechanical drives of stepper motor used in computer printers.

There are all kinds of stepper motors used in printers.
