Urgent Need for cards for 9 tracks tape

06/22/2007 11:50 PM

Does some one outthere have interfacing cards for transfering data form 9 track tape to IBM computer? Ours were out of function, except one. We need for spare.

9736 and 9737 from Storage Technology Corporation were little information about the cards and tape.

Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

You neglected to mention where you are (which probably means that you live in the USA!). have you tried a web search?

I did and it came up with:-

http://www.top10ten.de/index_de.html

I used to work for STK till Sun bought them out, but not on these actual products that you have. You may need to buy a working version to save your data, or get a special company to do it for you. I know of a company in the UK that might be able to help.....

If I remember correctly, the 9736 was a small 4mm (8mm?) tape library, which was sold off to another company by STk because the reliability was awful....I am afraid I have forgotten who that was (or if that was true, but I could find out if needed...!).

The early drives were I believe from HP and the later drives were from Sony I think.

For anyone else out there contemplating tape storage for serious data, please please only use proper drives with half inch tape technology, these small drives with 4 & 8mm tapes are not to my mind good enough for even a home PC tape backup...... let alone important data.......the drives were intended for video cameras only.....my camcorder has a hard disk, I wonder why????

Big reel one.

Is it possible to recreate the card for the same operational, without original schematic diagram? User guide for 9367 and 9337 are provided for help.

Actually the card is used to transfer very huge old data in big reel 9 tracks tape to available storage in time being.

Thank you for your fast reply :)

I bet a good tech could fix them cards, tho if ya needs to transfer info from reels try someone that works in the music restore, they might still have reel equip around to handle 9 tracks or more.

I worked for STK for 26 years, I spoke today with another colleague who worked even longer, neither of us know this tape drive!! All 97xx products were for libraries and not for 9 track in europe.....sorry. We both feel that the number is wrong!!!

There must still be a lot of 9 track stuff around in the world, buy something cheap (or rent) that still works! or give a companz a job to convert to another modern format!!

9 Track reels only have quite small amounts of data on them, much less than a gigabyte for example, a DVD will probably hold 10 or more tapes!!!!

No doubt! as you are ever to be the inner personnel of STK. I try to get another information from the man.

Here another clue:

The main system is STC 1960 series TU and FCU. The cards is for user interface from the system to IBM PC (not sure if the card is coded by JL)

Another needed information to be in right path shall be provided under guide. Mean that helped by your guide and I open the user guide from the man that operate the machine, should direct us to find the needed card.

Stated on the card are:

ENERSY SYSTEM LTD P/N 2125 REV.0 S/N _ _ _ _ (the other with P/N 2117 REV.B)

MADE IN USA.

The slot type is EISA if I'm not wrong.

Not sure about another company in my country that still use the machine, or lend their card if any.

The company is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.

I knew the 1960 drive well, but a long time ago, many 1000s were sold, especially to oil companies for exploration ships and rigs, parts should not be a problem on the open market, even complete machines..... the part you appear to be looking for is the formatter (interface), there were if I remember two different ones, one with the STK (STC at that time) interface, I have forgotten what the other one was called.....

I looked on ebay in the USA.....nothing, not even 2920 drives....

You could be in a serious position with such old technology, sorry.....

As I said earlier, it may be a good idea to pay to have important data converted by a company that specialises in such work and modernise your tape drives completely....
