Piping and Valve Material Selection

05/27/2014 2:14 AM

hi, everyone

In piping design as per ASME B31.1, what is the criteria for selecting a right material for pipe.

I was told, that, it depends on temperature and fluid being handled. I was given a thumb rule, for temperature less than 400 degree centigrade, it's A 106 Gr B.

and above 400 it's A 335 for steam piping.

As per standard, it says A 106 is for high temperature service.

Any justification to this thumb rule would be helpful, and please share any links, material that describe material selection criteria in detail (I'm also trying to get information).

Thank you

Go back to the organisation that published that particular standard, and ask there, including the individuals who did the telling.

You are asking beginner questions.

There are more subtle issues when designing B31.1 piping systems.

Piping systems must be designed based on

- Pressure design ( including shock and dynamic effects)

- Flexibility analysis, Deadload analysis

- Nozzle reactions on equipment

- Pipe support selection, location and loading on the piping system

- Corrosion, internal and external

etc...etc...etc..

Purchase the "Piping Handbook" and other books on piping design and begin to read.

Piping system design is not a simple matter that can be boiled down into a couple of "thumb rules"

Hey, thanks, for the interest shown.

I have been reading Piping handbook and a material selection guide, still question is unanswered.

I'm not understanding, why people assume material from very beginning of design and proceed for thickness (essential to withstand the pressure) calculation ??

any comments ??

If you want to look for specific material for pipe, you have to look at the TAble A-1 of Appendix A in ASME B31.1 or code you apply. There are a plenty range of teperature for each material pipe; but allowable stress decrease if temperature increase.

A106 Gr.B is the most common material in pipe industry, but if you have speccial requirements, it's necessary to conduct a special study for the fluid (solids, content of Cl, H2S, NH2, H2O, etc). Then the metallugic specialist can determine the right material, also you have to know the lifetime of facility.
