Siting Your Distribution Centers

Distribution centers (DCs) are increasingly important to an efficient supply chain. Market forces are demanding increasing flexibility and agility, putting pressure on shippers to optimize their networks of distribution centers and to do it quickly. Transportation accessibility is one of several factors that play big roles in determining whether a new DC will help a shipper meet customers' delivery requirements.

Yes, of course: siting.

If you live in the USA or France you have access to tons of information. The government, the industry and even the customers conduct studies on logystics.

I made alone a whole project of investment (the study) for a Logystical Activities Area. By one year I tried to did it by the book, but the lack of information of this pathetic underdeveloped country (Uruguay) threw me back. The final solution was a small complex of small warehouses. The average warehouse was 1000 square meters. The total area covered by the complex was 22 acres. That is a quarter of the adviced area for an enterprise of that kind.

My experienced advice for a newcomer: Keep it small, keep it scalable. It is absolutely impossible to manage the uncertainties in the design, so you have to minimize the risk by minimizing the investment.
