Shores Model D Standard Recording Scleroscope

05/29/2014 9:42 PM

I recently acquired a Shores Model D Standard Recording Scleroscope that has documents indicating it was made or sold in 1929. It came with the Roll Testing Stand and latched Storage Box. The manufacturer is no longer in business and there is limited information available online. One interesting search uncovered that another Shores Model D was donated to Yale University, Peabody Museum of Natural History, Collection Studies Center.

The two links below reference this: http://discover.odai.yale.edu/ydc/Record/2561101 http://discover.odai.yale.edu/ydc/Record/2561102

I'm not sure what company might be best to contact to determine the value of this instrument and accessories/paperwork. I'm sure that this is more of a collectors item or museum piece that can be used for a historical display.

I was hoping that someone from this Forum could recommend the best way for me to determine the value of this instrument and accessories. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a couple of them on Ebay for $185 and $488...I would say the original price stated on your link should be good....$285....I guess it depends on how good it looks and works...

Thanks. I saw those as well but figured they may not have had them appraised. I may be wrong thinking that something from that period would have more value. To be honest, I have not tried to use the instrument. I appreciate the reply.

Age itself does not impart value, it's the collectibility, rarity, importance....then again markets are determined by people, and they can be very quirky...

Have you searched for something like a "Technical" museum, like the Science Museum in Kensington, London?

I hear that they can be very helpful and if the museum you contact does not already have one......

Speaking for myself only, the apparent value seems to be quite low under $500 it would seem, though it is a really interesting piece (that I have NEVER ever heard of before today!), so why not give/lend it to a museum of your choice, as long as there is a suitably large sign giving your name as a Contributor to the Museum!!!

Just a thought!!!

Thanks for the museum ideas. I will look into that and possibly some universities that train in the technical/possibly mechanical engineering fields.
