Environmental Test Chamber Manufacturers

05/29/2014 10:25 PM

Hello All, I've been tasked with finding a reliable manufacturer of good quality environmental test chambers. We need programmable temperature and humidity cycling, with a temp range of -20°C to +60°C. The only hitch is my company has a tight budget, and there's no way we can afford a brand new one from a US or European manufacturer. So my question is, Does anyone have experience of any of the companies and their products from Asia, which produce much cheaper versions of what we're after? And how do I go about finding out which ones might produce good quality chambers that won't break after a few months? If anyone has any help or advice for me, it'd be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Rachael.

You might look also for used ones.

Thunder Scientific, Blue M and Tinius Olsen come to mind. They may have used ones taken in on trade.

Thermotron is the vendor I'm familiar with. Where I worked they were used in the environmental effects lab, engineering labs, and the factory for burn-in. They tried cheap imports, which failed quickly. They all require maintenance to the refrigeration systems.

The speed of temp change (given a mass with specific heat), and volume was not specified, but that adds cost in the capacity of the refrigeration and heater sizing.

You might find one at HGR Industrial Surplus not affiliated) and of course E bay is full of these at times, as a mater of interest I sold one on E bay 9 years ago. Do not be afraid to post a wanted now on Ebay and other sites it makes the job much easier than chasing ads.

Hello Devitg, I'm in New Zealand. We're anticipating huge shipping costs, but need to get a really good price on a unit to make this worth while and stick within our budget. Thank you all for the suggestions, I'm following a few of those up, but do keep 'em coming! Cheers, Rach.

Hi RachA All that used stuff is pretty expensive. Far less than new but expensive. I used to be the 3nd largest mfg of Modem Chipsets in the world. Second only to Rockwell in Sales. We also had several lines of Internal and external Modems. We started small. But it was not so much lack of $ it was going to take too dam long to get the test chamber. WE needed to SAME temps you are talking about. Right on the nose. if you want two of them for less than 500 then do the following. Go get a used Regrigerator that works. OR two if making two of them. Drill some holes in the sides to run cables from a computer or computers to run what ever it is you are making while they are exposed to these environments. Now. Some folks will say you can not do this. To hell with them it worked well for us for years. We ended up with 17 of the dam things. Now. Go to any discount hardware store and get a hot plate. Also a metal serving tray if you can find one. In Fact two are better. Also go to a place like granger supply to get a thermostat or use one from a toaster oven. most important is an oven and refrigerator thermometers. get one for each shelf. after running all the wires use high temp caulk but really almost any caulk is good. Now the two metel serving trays are to set the hot plate on and then hage one to two a few inches above the hot plate to help disperse the heat from the hot plate. now you can put a pan with a little water to control humiity. Do Not let the reefer turn on until it cools to almost room temp or below 40c.. this is not all info. but any good reck can take it from here. these work fine and cost less than 400 to make, that is $400 USD. feel free to ask if you need help. Jim

Used chambers can be a good investment. Try E. McGrath Co. in Salem, Ma.-http://www.emcgrath.com/catalog.html I suggest to decide what size chamber you require.

You say you are on a tight budget. Is that a tight capital budget or a tight operational budget?

LN2 (liquid nitrogen) temperature cycling chambers are a bit cheaper to buy, but, are vastly cheaper to run. The operational cost can be obscured by whoever picks up the electricity bill in your company. If you go this route make sure that the bean counters understand the saving for the company as a whole: sometimes it may appear that the cost to manufacturing is greater whilst the facilities overhead is overlooked.

in addition to the list posted by lyn, please consider also

https://www.fabsurplus.com

for used test chambers, and for lab and scientific equipment in general, such as microscopes, lasers , vacuum pumps, spectrometers and oscilloscopes, wafer and reticle QC, photolithography, coating, developing and deposition equipment.
