Studying Switchgears

06/26/2007 10:02 AM

Good afternoon,

First, I would like to thank you for this forum and giving us the chance to ask questions...

In fact, I'm a new graduated engineer, working in power station, and I would like to know how to start study the HV, MV Switchgears.. and what are the basic things that I should know, etc.

I'm confused and want some one to direct me to the right way of studying this subject.

Looking forward hearing from you.

Thank you.

engineer

I suggest you to study fundamentals and functioning of Circuit breakers, transformers, alternators, protection devices such as relays, timers and protection equipments. this will help you in performing your duty at Power station.

wish u good luck

I would suggest going to geindustrial.com and searching the pubs in the tech library and specifiying engineer areas. These will give you a wealth of information on products available and installation details. You may also want visit eaton-electrical.com and squared.com. Siemens also provides similiar information but it's diffilcut to find on their web-sites.

Further, consider visting ecmweb.com and searching on swichgear.

Hi friend,

You may start with going through documents such as HV, MV switchgear manuals, related drawings, operation, maintenance & troublshooting guidelines, inspection & test reports/checklists available at your office.

You can get better idea when you read relavant info on the existing switchgears of your power station and have a feel of them at the same time. By gaining first hand knowledge of the real environment of a power station and basic details of its equipment such as switchgears, you will have not only more knowledge but also more questions to ask.

When you try to get those questions answered, you are an experienced (considerable) engineer by that time & not a newly graduated engineer any more.

Good luck to you!

As others have suggested, use suppliers catalogs and their manuals.

Probably outdated now my "bible" was "Electrical Transmission and Distribution Reference Book" Westinghouse Electric Corporation, 1964.

The principals remain the same, however, the "toys" are just electronic and computerized now.

Dear Guest. Congratulations for for your new job. It is good place to start with Electrical job. There are two specific areas one is operation and other is maintenance. Get familiarised with your electrical system is the first and for most act to be done. The safety of operation of switchgear is another vital requirement. In India we have to comply with Indian electricity act for all operations in electrical systems.Specific safety regulations operational codes are to be followed.Every electrical engineer has to study these acts throughly before starting the job. I hope the country in which you are working also requires similar requirement. operational codes for all switchgear operation depending on the voltage and capacity of the substation and specific rules to be followed in your organisation is existing (Our organisation has its own standard Instructions to be followed) . Learn what are the records to be logged and maintained .

The layout of the switchgear ,operating sequence , line drawings and operation and maintenance manuals to be learnt throughly. Next to learn the operation of the breakers. SF6, VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breakers ),MOCB ,OCB ,ACB all has its own operational system. So learn what is your breaker. Once you are through with above you can safely start with your job rest your experience will teach you. Best wishes .

Find a trusted Mentor at the facility, and engage in discussion. Many more signposts will come out of someone with experience than any listing on CR4 could ever supply, and one waits far more quickly.
