Not being aware of the belt design I would recommend a light coating of of a petroleum base lubricant to physically treat the exterior of the pulleys. This is simply to deter corrosion. Paint, while longer lasting, therefore requiring less upkeep, can hide corrosion from inspection creating a hazard.

This is the 3rd corrosion topic that I have addressed here.... (a little "twist", on this version of my response, if I may) ~ Knowing what questions to ask is a sign of a keen mind. Knowing HOW to ask the question (including correct specifics/parameters) denotes a hint of knowledge in that mind. Knowing WHO to pose the question TO reveals Profound Brilliance(!) in that mind... If you deal with corrosion issues, go to the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International www.nace.org

Subscribe, there (for FREE) to the Network of professionals around the world (the NACE Corrosion Network / List Server), and pose your question to the real experts who make this their life's work. They offer classes and certification in numerous aspects of corrosion and the protection against same. You'll learn more from these forums than you ever DREAMED existed about the topic... Best regards, T.M.D.

Are these drive pulleys and belts used for power transmission or are they pulleys to move belts that transport the raw materials. Consider using lagged pulleys for drives and takeups with a good epoxy paint to protect the sides and taperlocks used for transport. Oil on power transmission belts is usually not preferred due to increased slippage. Many pulleys can be purchased with protective coverings. Greasing all main bearings regularly will help protect them and keep out corrosives. sealed bearings are even better as long as cleaning the exteriors is also performed. For transmission pulleys you can paint the areas not in contact with the drive belts.
