Dark side of the Moon

06/29/2007 2:56 AM

Why there is a dark side of the Moon? All the moons have a dark side or our Moon is the only one that has it?

Our moon do not have a dark side. A side is however dark for ± 14 days.

The reflection from earth will relieve some darkness as well.

On the other hand there are always a dark side and a sunny side at a given moment on any planet or moon.

The "dark side of the moon" is a reference to the fact that one side of the moon always faces away from the earth and is therefore "dark" to us. (There are several 19th century fiction stories about civilizations that exist undetected by us on the far side of the moon.) This is due to the moon having an orbital period exactly equal to its rotational period. As stated in a previous reply, all surface areas of the moon receive equal exposure to sunlight.

"(There are several 19th century fiction stories about civilizations that exist undetected by us on the far side of the moon.)"

This has recently been confirmed. There is a planet directly behind the moon that has an exact orbital period as the moon, thus we never see it. Acutally, the moon's mass in only a fraction of what we detect, the remainder being made up by the hidden planet behind it.

SETI administrators are debating on when to make an announcement. Sources indicate it will probably be around the time of the next full moon.

Stay tuned.

My concern about these moon-men always was "where do they go when the moon is getting smaller?".

About the planet behind the moon - It long ago smashed into the planet in the current orbit of the asteroids.

The Moon will turn full on May 31 at 9:04 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (6:04 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. It is said that it could be blue.

This fact , together with my observation of the moon during daytime proves my theory that the moon is a light source. Tonight the Lunatics will simply be trying out new curtains/light-bulbs.

Kris you devil, how did you manage to retrogress 30 days? Could it have something to do with the intensity of the moonlight at noon?

The lunatics will have a field day tonight because of this.

Seriously, I was just watching Skye news coverage of the flaming car at Glasgow airport. It appeared that they were spraying water on it. It was always my notion that you never spray water on a gasoline fire because it just spreads it without actually putting it out. I thought a dry chemical such as ammonium phosphate should be used on such fires. Maybe it was more important to keep the surrounding structure cool. Just wondering.

You got me puzzled on the '30 days' , but I'm still going to indulge in a little he-he.

<Heh hehehehehhe.>

Right, where was I. That's a nice link - I recognize the diagram ! Now I'm going to have to check the news about the car. Somehow I got distracted today (me , distracted ? Surely not.). Maybe I'll google 'get organized' and try to decide who's club can help me. Marcia has a fanclub , and there's another lady there who used to do tupperware ( I wonder if that's for Farmers ?). So many difficult decisions...........

Its been a long day and maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake but last time I checked, today is, in fact, June 30 (on this side of the pond anyway).

Is what I'm missing here?

About the car. I think its now been confirmed that it was a terrorist attack at Glasgow airport.

I really should wake up/get out more shouldn't I ! . They won't allow windows in my little room for some reason. . Any windows. It is probably due to my repetitive humour.

The Car thing I shall go look up in a minute. Interesting in connection to the London stuff. Best not go too far off topic , but the prevention difficulties are enormous. Even more troubling when you consider what can be carried in a suitcase. I hope the security at Hospital imaging departments is good.

'they were spraying water on it.'

I think even at that early stage, they were, correctly as it turned out, worried it might have propane cylinders in the car, and so were trying to keep it cool. Still, standing a bit close for my taste!

Sigh! None of this matters to us here in the Heartland as we have had rain and cloud cover for the past several days -- and will have into tomorrow. So no matter what the moon looks like, we won't see it.

Still, John John's links are pretty cool.

Over the ages, the moon has lost whatever rotational energy it had to spare. The state of the one face of the moon always facing the earth has the lowest energy, as far as its rotation is concerned.

Answer from NASA:

http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/Academy/UNIVERSE/MOON.HTML

"People often refer to "the dark side of the moon", but there is no such thing. The sun shines on all sides of it in turn. However, there is a "far side of the moon" which is never seen from the earth. Over the eons, the gravitational forces of the earth have slowed down the moon's rotation about its axis until the rotational period exactly matches the revolution period about the earth".

So, there is a side never seen from Earth. Question remains: are other moons behaving identical?
