316L Pilot Projection Weld Nuts

06/25/2014 12:19 PM

Hello:

Does anyone know of a good source for 316L pilot projection weld nuts in inch sizes from 1/4"-1". We have done several web searches and many hits state that they have 316L but it usually turns out to be too small, 18-8 or metric.

Thank you,

316L would be very difficult, 316L SS is not your usual or typical fastener material for nuts.

you could call Fastenal and see if they can locate them.

and I'm sure you already tried McMaster

Local machine shop might be a place to get these made. It will probably end up costing more than you were initially planning though.

Contact Star Stainless Screw Co. in Totowa, NJ. 800-554-2658 or 973-256-2300. They have one of the biggest inventories of exotic alloys especially St Stl. Not only do they have the run of the mill grades but also a substantial inventory of 316 fasteners.

I have used them when no one else closer even heard of what I was looking for. Very seldom do they not have what I need.

I don't know why but many of the things I need are the "bastard" types. They fill the order for exotic fasteners. Sorry but I can't find a web site for them. Use the telephone #s above. No financial relationship, just a recommendation from past experiences.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I many have a need for 316 hardware so I did a little searching. Found this in another company's newsletter:

Tim Roberto, Star Stainless Screw National Sales Manager, is the Sphere 1 primary contact. Tim has worked for Star for 20 years; a rookie by Star's standards of long-term employment. Please continue to work with your existing salesperson, or contact Tim if you do not have one and he will provide a sales contact. He may be reached at 800-554-2658 or tim.rj@starstainless.com

as earlier stated,....... they may have to be made, and you may have to look into it. Depending on your need/requirement. it will put a pinch on your budget.

Massey-

Sorry to hear about the results with them. I may have a couple of other ideas and will also ask friends about as source.

Will keep you in mind and not forget about it.

Making the nuts and pilot projections on a lathe would be easy enough to do. Once programmed correctly it could be a bar fed, lights out operation, easy enough. But the addition three protrusions provided for weld penetration would be very difficult to do as material would have to be removed on a vertical mill to leave the three protrusions.

I am trying to paste a picture, it shows up here but not when I submit the comment.
