Extra Tanget Length on Bends

07/01/2007 9:23 AM

Why do 90 degrees and 81 degrees bends have a 1000mm extra tangent length on each side ?

most of the times we end up cutting this extra tanget length to play with the elbow angle.

why the extra tgt length ?

and why do other bends have only 500mm extra tanget length ?

which bends have which ?

Depending on the pipe size and the wall thickness, the shop needs some straight length on both ends of the bend to provide "grip" in the bending machine. When calculating the cost of making a total bend the shop must include the "grip" material and "grip" material cost. You paid for it and the shop furnished it to you rather than cheat you out of it. However, I am sure you can (for an extra cost) ask them to give you "Trimmed" bends to a specific degree arc. Try it, but be careful what you ask for.

Post 1 is correct.

Additional to that is that it makes economical sense as well.

If a supplier has to keep stock of say 4 standard sizes additional storage space has to be provided (at a cost) and total stock levels must be increased.

Dead stock is costly.

The apparent wastage actually benefits all the role players.

There is a difference between Elbows and Bends.

A. Elbows are characterized by its small radius, that can be used in piping systems where no restriction for using SR and LR elbows.

1. 90o & 45o Long Radius (LR) elbow have a radius of 1.5 NPS,

2. 90o & 45o Short Radius (SR) elbow have a radius of 1 NPS,

B. Bends are characterized by its huge radius, more than 5 NPS, that can be used in pipelines to allow for pigs to pass through the pipeline using launcher and receiver. So it must have a respectively large radius.
