BEV vs FCEV vs Diesel Cars

06/30/2014 3:26 PM

Toyota just unveiled their hydrogen powered vehicle that will cost around $70K. This is in direct opposite to the Tesla battery powered electric vehicles. While those two battle out which system is best, Audi comes along with a diesel car that gets 40mpg with none of the drawbacks of the other two. It seems that Toyota is banking on fuel cells while Tesla is sticking with battery technology because they already have a lot invested and can't change now.

TOYOTA has eaten too much of the "GREEN" tree fodder--to them it's ALL about totally-zero (water vapor) emissions!

Wonder how much of an "UP-charge" will the insurance companies levy upon this Toyota HINDENBERG automotive experiment?

It's hard to beat a Volt.....especially with a range extender....

A Volt does not need a range extender, it's already built in under the hood. That's a picture of a Nissan Leaf pulling the range extender because when the batteries go flat you're flat outta' luck.

What you need, is subjective....A Volt with a range extender would go a long ways...the extender pictured with the Leaf adds 300+ miles, which added to the 380 mile advertised Volt 'fully charged' range, puts you close to 700 miles...This would probably only be used in a pinch, or to prove a point, but anyway there it is....

And where do you put the boat?

If I pull a trailer I want a boat on it!

You would probably have to go with the bolt-on version...but probably do-able....

SE...I like your option (and it has a LOT better sound system) but the basic problem with all of these "green" electric vehicles is that unless you have a wind turbine, hydro-electric plant in your back yard or a roof full of photovoltaic cells the power still comes from good old fossil fuel...oh wait, it comes out of the wall !!!

Audi (and most other manufacturers) has a diesel powered car that gets over 40mpg...hell, they have some that get over 70 but unfortunately most of those vehicles are not offered in the US. I drive a 10 year old 1.9 TDI that gets over 40 mpg at 65-70 mph

Electric is cool but they take too long to recharge.

Fuel cells are developing and you can refill in a jiffy (that is IF you can find a hydrogen station!) but driving around in a bomb waiting to go off isn't something that I fancy.

Maybe I'm just old school gearhead but give me a good old internal combustion engine any day.

Well I agree these little diesel cars get good performance, but mileage improvement is not the primary goal, it's cutting dependence on fossil fuels and ground level pollution.... New technologies take time to tweak, and certainly going to electric powered vehicles, whether battery or fuel cell, will take time....Ideally we would have auto-connect fast chargers at every parking area, but every step in that direction, is an improvement, though it might not be immediately evident....ground level pollution in big cities is causing Asthma and other health issues and electric vehicles would help solve that problem....

A lot of people don't seem to realize that the switch to electric vehicles is not just to save money, it's to save lives and the economy....it's to keep on keeping on....Making it economically rewarding before it becomes mandatory is a difficult, time consuming job...more and more people are embracing the technology to help build the bridge, even if they have to bear some expense and inconvenience....

Just give it time for the fuel cells to build infrastructure as this will be the biggest cost and greatest resistance to the change. It took a better part of a decade to properly store LPG/Propane.

"BIG OIL" will try to buy this technology and others that hurt their business like they have been doing for decades.

How many people can even conceive of standing around for 1.5 hours, much less 8-10 hours, while they "filled" the "electrical tank" of their vehicle?
