Interconnected Seismometers - Detecting Seismic Activity

07/01/2014 9:33 AM

Hello,

I will like to try this Interconnected Seismometers - Detecting Seismic Activity. Perhaps a new engineering experiment with involvement of students. This may help us quick detection and early warning of Seismic Activity in Himalayan areas.

As number of instruments required will be larger in numbers, it may be worth developing them using engineering tools in a cost effective manner.

Anyone wish to contribute to free ideas is most welcome.

Yes, USA and many other countries have. We do not have such Seismic Monitoring network in India.

Then copy what is being done in those countries.

We do have some Government controlled activity but data is not available for public online or offline, makes it difficult. I will like some public access to save people in time.

http://www.moes.gov.in/content/national-center-seismology

India Meteorological Department is maintaining a countrywide National Seismological Network (NSN), consisting of a total of 82 seismological stations, spread over the entire length and breadth of the country. This includes: a) 16-station V-SAT based digital seismic telemetry system around National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, b) 20- station VSAT based real-time seismic monitoring network in North East region of the country and (c) 17-station Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network (RTSMN) to monitor and report large magnitude under-sea earthquakes capable of generating tsunamis on the Indian coastal regions. The remaining stations are of standalone/ analog type. A Control Room is in operation, on a 24X7 basis, at IMD Headquarters (Seismology) in New Delhi, with state-of-the-art facilities for data collection, processing and dissemination of information to the concerned user agencies

Then it needs political will, and not technical will.

Do you envisage a network of amateur seismic stations reporting data to to a publicly accessible location similar to amateur met' stations? eg http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/KH/Phnom_Penh.html

Not sure how you could save lives with your idea....

I am not talking about weather here. It is about Seismic Earthquake and Tsunami Seismic information which may help people if they know in time what is happening around them in the nearby few hundred km.

Shyam, I know you aren't talking about weather. The example was along the lines of "something like this" in respect to its accessibility and how field data is aggregated.

Yes. Wireless network linked quick essential information exchange.

There were 24 deaths because DAM water was released and students were taking picture in dry river which flooded in few minutes.

I am keen in all such man activated and natural disaster reduction network.
