Nitrogen Piping

07/04/2014 5:27 AM

I have been given a job to do and it is to carry out piping works for nitrogen liquid, the worry that i have is that there is no proper lay out plan showing expansions and contractions, the correct type of piping material to be used.

I have only been given a simple lay out plan with steam piping to be used with thread connections, what is the correct connections to be used threaded or flanged..

Please can some one advice me on the correct material and the risks.

Ask for a set of Utility Line Diagrams, which will give the Piping Specification to be used. Then obtain a copy of the Piping Specification and also the Piping Isometric drawing. There should also be a Materials Take Off list accompanying the Piping Iso'.

Don't start without those documents to hand, for then there won't be any risks.

I fear that the documents you mention are the very ones that the AP is supposed to produce.

Hi,

As Liquid nitrogen is a cryogenic liquid, there are so many safety and functional issues related to a it's piping.

It should be done with very good care, design, material and workmanship. The design or layout should have sufficient expansion/contraction bellows, thermal relief valves for safe venting of expanded gases from trapped liquid, a nice insulation suitable for application, suitable piping material matching with impact properties at cryogenic temperature, suitable supporting arrgt allowing expansion and contraction, face separators, compatible gaskets ( Threaded connection are not recommended piping embedded in insulation) welded connection is recommended excepts in components/instrument process connection where welded connection is practcaly not possible.. etc etc. And all this should be as per international/ local codes and regulations .

So, It is recommended to get the piping designed by an experienced design engineer , get the work done by experienced technician and supervised by experienced enginner
