Disabling Mousepad Tap

07/13/2014 9:17 PM

Is there any way to disable the mousepad TAP so you must press L or R key to select a function? As I move across the pad it often acts as if I have pressed the key to select and loads something I had no intent of selecting...I've tried Touchpad Blocker, but it still allows touching the pad to select, is there any way I can stop this aggravation?

I like a separate, wireless mouse and a blocker.

Install a separate mouse....I like the trackballs myself....I find it much easier to use...

Against my desires I'm watching one of the Harry Potter movies on cable right now. [My better half is a rabid Harry Potter fan.] As I watch one after another of the absurd collection of random incantations do or don't work for one side or the other I dawns on me that this desire for the correct software incantation to block a touchpad from responding is just like J.K. Rowlings fantasy world. To whom does the loyalty of a laptop lie, to the one who paid handsomely for a keyboard and touchpad on a lap or to those who told the touchpad how to respond to a touch.

I'm sorry but I cannot help you. You should look to the web pages and forum of your laptop manufacturer. That is unless you need a better wand.

I don't know if you can completely disable it, but you might be able to change the response time for opening a file. If you right-click on the background you should get a menu to 'personalize' your device, and that should include the option to change the touchpad.

One of the folders under the touchpad menu will (or should) allow you to change the double-click speed for opening a file. You can try different speeds to see if there is one that works for you. (I think if you set the double-click speed very fast, that means it will require 2 rapid clicks to open a file, making it less likely to accidentally open a file.)

I know on the Thinkpad you can disable it from the Control Panel. I don't have it with me but I found this on google:

Go to Control Panel, then Mouse, then click the Device Settings tab and you should see your touch pad as one of the devices. Make sure your touch pad is highlighted and click the Settingsbutton and you will see Tapping as one of the choices.

I had the reverse problem where the tapping did not work and found that a tick-box somehow was unchecked under the control panel. I guess you could do the opposite to that. Try googleing "touchpad not working".

Or adjust the sensitivity;

Click "Start | Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Devices and Printers | Mouse." Click "Buttons" in the Mouse Properties window. Click the arrow pointing towards the "Devices" header. Click "Double-Click Speed" to adjust how fast the touchpad responds to taps for accessing links. Click "Device Settings | Settings | Sensitivity | Touch Sensitivity." Move the slider to alter settings from light to heavy touch, depending on your preference. Click "Apply" to save your changes, and then "OK" to exit

Simple! A light bead of superglue around the edge will definitely disable those clicks.

Cute, but the problem I want to solve is I DO NOT want a tap on the pad on my laptop to be equivalent to clicking a key on the pad. Mice and wireless mice work fine at my desk, but when I'm at dialysis, I only have my lap. "touchpad blocker" works fine while typing, but when using the pad to move the cursor, it lets a tap or change in pressure to be equivalent to a pad key press. That often selects things I do not want when I move to the lower or upper right corner to scroll a screen, I often move the cursor across ads for insurance or Viagra and the pad assumes I'm clicking on that when it is not my intent.

Hi I wasn't thinking about laptops when I answered. I occassionally use a company laptop (with a mouse attached) while on travel. I HATE that stupid touchpad for the very reason you mentioned. Maybe superglue a thin sheet of acrylic over it :-) I think if I had my very own laptop that's what I would do.

One can reset the sensitivity of the pad. Control Panel. Track Pad, and it offers a scale for sensitivity. You can also adjust the mouse button in Control Panel.

I have the same problem with my laptop touchpads. I don't mind the tracking, but I don't like the clicking. I have had several laptops with the same issue. I fix it by decreasing the click sensitivity or eliminating the click altogether from the control panel. I seem to recall in one case I had to get the latest driver program and possibly a utility program to get adjustment controls.
