Additional Road Taxes For Electric Vehicles??

07/17/2014 12:46 PM

I know I will receive some informative discussion here based on previous questions I have posed.

I have recently heard that there are possible proposals to impose additional federal road taxes on all vehicles depending on miles driven. I tow a 5th wheel camper with a diesel pickup truck. I tow my RV for vacations and business...traveling to all parts of the country to teach safety classes. The more miles I drive, and the more weight I tow, the more taxes I pay.

What about electric vehicles? As far as I know, the drivers of electric vehicles do not pay any road taxes. Should they pay road taxes? I think alternative energy vehicles are a good thing but I also think that if someone uses the roads they should help in paying for them. Should the drivers of electric/petro vehicles pay taxes based on miles driven?

I think it is apparent that there will more non-petro vehicles on the road in the future. Should those vehicle owners pay taxes for their use of the road which pays for the construction and upkeep of the roads?

I appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Don

Perhaps something in a three wheel vehicle would be easier to budget?

Actually, I don't mind the expense. I get a lot of smiles out of those tires. :-)

I hope to have that problem if I can EVER get my Vette completed and back on the road.

My suggestion o the three wheelers was similarly tongue in cheek, as the examples that come to mind are also biased towards smiles vs. miles.

Is the bottom picture from Lombard St. in San Francisco? The people look about right.

That is exactly right. It is a photo of the annual Easter big wheel race down the hill.

Thanks for the confirmaion. The road looked familiar but a lot more greenery than I remember. I guess the plantings have really grown since the last time I was there in 1989. Lombard St. on the other end goes into the Presidio of San Francisco where I was posted from '85 to '89.

Brave Sir Robin....I agree; if you use it you should pay for it. I have no problem with paying gasoline/diesel taxes. I do have a problem with the possibility of a tax based on miles driven in addition to the already tax per gallon on fuel. I'm already paying for miles driven due to the fuel used for miles driven.

And, I guess when you count all the cards on the table, everyone, even those that don't drive, benefit from our roads, bridges and highways. Trucks haul consumer goods all over the country.

Re: Additional Road Taxes For Electric Vehicles??

The thought occurred to me that once Musk released his patents, the ability of our current energy dominators to buy and bury the technology has been eliminated.
The "range anxiety" argument has been pretty much proven a contrivance. Plus it is completely irrelevant once the car can travel the same distance as a gas powered vehicle. That technology currently exists and was released to the public in the patents Tesla opened up. Musk has not waited for the government to build the supporting infrastructure and is building the fast chargers himself and making sure they are available.
So what would be the next avenue for undermining the average American from moving to an electric car? The Tesla Type 3 mid size sedan is schedule to begin production in 2017 with a starting price of 30,000 and a 300 mile range. About the same as a decently equipped Impala or Equinox.
Of Course, Legislate and tax them out of reach of the average, struggling to keep fiscally solvent American. We can do this through government taxation and the elimination of the subsidies that make the technology affordable and do it by tweaking the politicians we already own. (sort of)
Round Four of "who killed the electric car" coming to a legislative session near you.
Just a thought.

May be Off Topic, but in the Tesla scheme, who pays and how much is paid to man the charging stations, and what is the price to charge a car? I am not familiar enough with it. Do you do Laundromat style, dropping quarters into the slot , until charged? How is the electricity that is being delivered to the charger, being developed? Solar? Oil? Nat gas? Coal? Of interest, Thanks. mac

C-Mac,

Musk and Tesla are paying to install the superchargers. They are unmanned.

http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger

This is a Tesla at the station here in Madison. It has three stands.

It will be solar powered in the next year. Madison Zoning restrictions are a bit sticky to work with even when its a green project. So much for liberal eh? LOL

Currently they are on the "wind Preferred" list from MG&E. That meanswhen there is Electricity being generated by Wind power that is what they are supposedly getting. They actually have to pay extra for it too - and I'm not sure how they can tell? Is it a different color? :-)

Thank you for the info and picture. Now I have a visual. Saw a Road and Track article, about the tester needing to charge a Tesla, and seeing another Tesla at a diner, or some such.. They were talking, and both needed to charge before long, but the closest station in their area was a bit of a way away,. They ending up "racing" to beat the other guy to get there, so as not having to wait for the winner to recharge! Also, I saw that a Proto-type Hydrogen Honda car was going to be using a solar charged Hydrogen producer, telephone booth style, to service the cars, if they ever went into production. That I would like to see. Now, I guess we are going to have to get some of those Sun/ Solar credits to pay for the roads….
