I have an HP laptop and an Apple 5S phone. Wifi is built into my laptop. My phone has a personal hotspot. So when I'm not around Wifi, I turn on my phone's hotspot and then connect my laptop to my phone through Wifi. From there my laptop reaches the internet through my phone's 4 LTE signal. What is hard about that?

This is called tethering. Some phones/phone companies. ask you to set up a special plan and pay extra for tethering, but the process is basically the same.

You are describing something that was not asked for.

As you say it is easy to share your internet from your mobile. But it is not as easy to route the connection towards your mobile.

What you need to look for is reverse thethering.

check this: http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/phonesformobileworkers/a/how-to-reverse-tether-to-share-laptop-internet-connection.htm

I tried it once unseccesfully and its not straight forward as one might think. Be aware that some wirless adapters do not support thethering or need an update of the driver.

Woof! OK now I know what is trying to be accomplished. If I have my laptop running with wifi on, and then I open the Settings on my iPhone and turn on wifi, my laptop doesn't appear in the list of wifi hotspots. Yeah, I can see that being an interesting problem. In Windows, there is that "Let everyone get to the network through this computer" thing. I can't remember how to reach it, but if you do, I think you have to use the iPhone's ability to specify a network to connect to through manually giving it all the connection information. I'm thinking that you want the phone to join that 192.168.blah.1 IP address. That might work. The only problem might be the settings for protocol and encryption. Anyway, it's worth a try. Good luck!

Both Apple and Android smartphones have a built-in WiFi capability. For Apple phones go to Settings | WiFi; for Android go to:

There is no need to do anything with your router settings, unless your firewall limits the machines which may be connected.

The question is what if you do not have a wireless router but want to access the internet with your mobile phone without using your mobile data package.

For this you have to make the internet LAN connection available via the wireless modem of your computer to your mobile phone.

Happy surfing!

Why posting OT?

Have not tried it but it sounds plausible.

There will be a time when I need it and I will try this.

Does it work with Win7?
