Good information, but I wonder *why* they (SALK Institute) hasn't already patented it?

Promising yes but the best way to control it is to control your weight. I'm currently classified as "Symptomatic"...and I test nearly every day. Losing weight is a b**ch but I'm convinced I can do it and get my sugar levels back to where they should be. I eat as little sugar and carbs as I can and have loose 1 or 2 pounds a week. It's not fast but it's steady! It would be faster if I could still get good exercises like long walks in...but my back will not allow me to do that any longer. One old farts opinion!

I think the reason there is so much Diabetes is that so many are over weight!

I agree weight has a lot to do with it, and weight loss has been proven to be a mitigating result....I believe sugar is the main culprit here, it leads to overeating because the food tastes better, or sweeter....I also believe it is addictive in nature....A diet of protein and fat such as Atkins, puts you off sweets, once weaned you have no sugar craving at all...Still to avoid sugar is like having size 28 feet and dancing through a minefield, it's almost impossible...I think there is a psychological aspect to sugar as well, the mood swings you get tend to occupy the mind, and lead to a high energy action period followed by a down resting period, this tends to be more stimulating in that it makes your energy level in tune with your daily routine, but it's an illusion that is also addictive...When off sugar your energy level is higher on average by a good margin...but you don't have the high jumping off points you get with a sugar rush....it is the opiate of the metabolism...

There are several types of "sugar" that can be blame as related to developing (acquired) diabetis. I believe one of the main culprit is the fructose type of sweeteners.. Drinking soda, either diet or regular, is a big factor in being diabetic as well as hindering weight reduction! Eating all processed foods are also another contributing factor!

Limiting ingesting the above to a minimum coupled with a regular exercise regiment will control and many times actually reverses the condition!

Expanded info on FGF's

I would suspect that discovery is the result of "throw it at the wall and see what sticks." (aka, observe as many markers as possible for possible uses)

It might be very hopeful. But as the list of FGF's shows, these molecules have multiple functions, by location, and may cause unintended effects. Caution is the watch-word.

I don't really care how they discovered it, but that it does play a very important role in regulating blood glucose. That is fantastic news for diabetics.
