How To Calculate The Battery Capacity Loss Per Cycle

08/07/2014 4:48 AM

Hey everybody!

I'm a non native English speaker and I don't have a lot of knowledge in engineering. So please don't be too hard on me ;)

For a study project I want to optimize the usage of a battery on the energy market (sell at high prices, buy at low prices). I already wrote my optimization program, but I also want to include the reduction in available energy storage capacity depending on DOD and number of cycles. Is there any approximation I can use for Li-Ion or Lead-Acid Batteries? Or do you have any other idea how to approximate the capacity loss?

Thank you very much!

Please elaborate a little bit more on the commercial part.

We are keen on getting involved and earn money with you!

I only know two types of batteries. New ones and dead ones.

After three times reading I got it now. What sort of batteries are we talking about? If you have a specific brand in mind you would best be looking at testing it.

Measure the current multiply that by the time it is being supplied. Then refer to the battery manufacturers data and do some arithmetic.

Oh, your English is very good. You don't have to be apologetic about it. Come to think of it, English is not my mother tongue either. But CR4 in particular, and English-speaking people in general, are a tolerant bunch. They forgive us our trespasses benevolently. i would like you to see and hear this delightful extract from the movie My Fair Lady

"Why can't the English learn to speak?"

ps: Oops, the video is blocked for some reason, you can try to search for it on YouTube

Hi Fredski:

I did see somewhere that these Lithium Ion Batteries run for 30+ years. So were they manufactured 30 years ago or are estimated? I think there were some in testing for that long.

I am looking for something like that which can deliver very small power for 30 plus years even after I die on earth.

I am also interested in having a club of crazy engineers who can join Coffee Cup electronics friendship Club in UK, USA and India leaving aside their great ego for a while. Where are you located. I know that you are worth for friendship but just let me know.

It looks Sleep Apnea market is growing due to health ignorance and market is estimated for 25-50 billion dollars. This idea came to me after looking at your health note. I have one CPAP machine which I bought for my wife to sleep well as she developed some breath related problem.

The type of battery you have will have a profound effect on the discharge cycle life and power capacity.

Each type of battery chemistry will have different characteristics to consider.
