Engine Speed Conversion

08/15/2014 11:10 AM

How to convert the speed of 6,000 KVA, 50 Hz, 18 cylinder SEMT Pielstick Engine rated at 500 rpm to 615 rpm? Does it affect the efficiency of the engine after conversion?

Ask SEMT Pielstick. They made the engine.

Dear Mr. ARNULFOPALACIO,

It is not possible to convert/alter the speed of an internal combustion engine which is designed and already built. The basic Equation for an internal combustion Engine is

I.H.P. = (P x L x A x N)/ 33000

where H.P = Power developed by the Engine, known I.H.P. i.e. Indicated Horse Power,

P = Mean Pressure developed in PSI (Pounds per Sq.Inch - British Unit) in side the Engine Cylinder,

L = Stroke of the Piston in Feet, (3.28 Feet = 1 Metre),

A = Effective Area of the piston, in Sq.Inches ( 1 Inch = 2.54 cm or 25.4 MM)

N = RPM of the Engine.

From the above you can see nothing can be changed. If you are particular to have higher speed, then use a belt and drive or gear box of suitable ratio, in your case the ratio is 1:1.23
