Aluminium Tape Over Ignition Coil

08/18/2014 12:51 PM

A plastic engine cover "Eco Tec" over the ignition coil assembly (4 plugs) is missing on a car. If I cover the coil instead with an aluminium adhesive tape - to prevent dirt getting inside, could not the coil induce some current in the tape and get damaged ?

Thank you ! It would be fine as the damned thing (both new or used) could not be found at our place. And the aluminium foil tape is much stronger than a grey or black plastic tape.

Why not just get one from the junk yard, or Ebay...?

How do you know that he doesn't know the answer?

In America, we sometimes believe it's better to ask forgiveness than ask permission.

So if this is what you want to do, go ahead if you can live with the possible consequence of failure. What's the worst that could happen?

It might come loose and cause bigger problems.....Why are you opposed to fixing it properly?

I'm not opposed to fixing it properly.

Your photo shows the entire engine cover assembly while I believe the coil cover is the narrow, center cover.

Until the proper cover can be installed, tape would be better than nothing.

You may have a problem with the adhesive on the tape melting and causing a mess.

Use the Al tape. Don't let it touch anything electrical.

Don't worry about induced currents.

He needs to make and get the Aluminum tape from Lyndoor Industries that has the non-conductive, high dielectric constant adhesive. Otherwise who know? It could work. If it does induce current and burn the car down, then what Yuri? I assume you cannot find the original cover, and cannot order a new one on Ebay? Then find another car with one, grease it with vaseline petrolatum or wax, and apply Smoothe-On pourable castable epoxy, and make a new one.

You may find it strange but I have not driven the car since.

Just in case, should indeed change for something else the Alu scotch I stuck very properly then.

Cut a plastic food container to the shape and stick it down with the tape. Use a microwave safe container for better heat resistance.

My first instinct would be to think about splash and condensation water trapping. Then I'd worry about my reputation as a mechanic. Are you on a convoy in Ukraine?
