I can't seem to understand the apparent difference in size, in the photos above it looks about shuttle size, but it's only 29ft. In the 'scientist inspects closely' picture, it looks about 29ft. I don't get it.

My guess is that they're afraid to try and bring it down because they're unsure if they can via remote control.

Yes, the shuttle was actually ground controlled on descent but there was the black out period where communication was not possible.
