Random Change of Time and Date on Point of Sales

09/08/2014 8:31 AM

I have various point of sales of the same make that work online and off line. When offline they randomly change time and date. I checked the batterries they are ok. What might be the solution to this problem hence they are all brand new and I was about to start using them when this issue came up?

Never worked on one of these, but it might be just configuration of the clock: Internal or from the server.

I'd call the manufacturer if reading the manual was of no help.

Thanks for the swift reply. The manufacturer is still trouble shooting the issue for the past ten days !

The solution is to send them back to the manufacturer for replacement under warranty, and not pay the invoice until satisfactory.

I have no idea from the sparse information, too. I do have a couple of recommendations, track the "random" changes in time entries to see if they are truly random and not just the device's internal clock stopping when an external reference becomes unavailable. Keep track in a separate ledger (notebook) all of the transactions and actual date and time for a little while. (This will be a pain but it is just temporary.) You might find that the transactions do get stored in proper sequential order but with similar to each other date and times, wrong time zone date and times, impossible date and times or some random distribution pattern in the dates that implies the root cause. You might find a software selection for where this device gets its date and time stamp that is improperly set. You could also be getting hacked by a cyber criminal that may or may not impact your finances. If you are being hacked, gaining as much information as possible is important to find a solution and possible culprit.

When you say they are 'random,' how are the dates and times different, actually? Do they suddenly change to (possibly radically) different dates and times (possibly all in the past), or start out correct but slowly drift in different directions?

Please characterise what they are *actually* doing, ie, how they're different, what they are and how they change. Some representative examples would be helpful.

Examle one of them went back as far as 1/01/1977. Futther more some went ahead of time with a week or month. Tried resetting and remains the same after rebooting or on and off.

Did you check the batteries on all of the units? Going back to 1/01/1977, sounds like the battery on that unit at least is bad.

Redfred had some good points to make, keeping a log will help determine if there is any pattern. Do the units that skip ahead a week or month always skip ahead that amount(difference form NOW), or put the exact same date/time in every time?

There is a difference between the time it uses when online, and the date/time stamp it uses when offline; so is there a procedure to set the units realtime clock to the online source when it is connected?

Just something to think about

Try powering from UPS or use power line filter.

Have you tried that? You state that they can't keep time when off-line. Maybe they don't even have internal clocks - they have to get the time from the network?
