Like any usage of electrical equipment, it depends on how the system is designed and integrated.

Yes... I have seen and approved plans for many installation in the health care field for the use of VFDs in HVAC systems. They are especially useful where control of air pressure in one area relative to another is required, such as in isolation units.

Agreed. But pertaining to energy saving is VFD driven Airhandling units a proven technology for Hospitals. My doubt is because most of the healthcare areas have specific number of airchanges required and with a VFD driven will that be achievable. Also, the level of current harmonic distortions..

Follow the specified number of air changes. If it takes a VFD to do that, then so be it.

A VFD is usually effective where you have varying loads. It's not whether A VFD can handle it. That is part of the design of the system. Choosing a size air handling unit with a VFD that can handle these changes in load. It's just one part of the system. One unit may have several of the volume controls for different areas. Or could be part of a VAV Fred refers to.

Agree that VFDs are effective for varying loads.

AHUs with Plug fan driven with VFD and AHUs with belt driven (conventional type), How power saving is possible in a hospital.

Im much concerned about the Harmonic distortions Variable frequency drives will create in the system. Hospitals already have a lot of non linear loads.

Use CE-marked equipment, then, to alleviate the concern.

Changes in heat and cooling load through out the day and change of season. Changes in the volume of patient care. During day light hours more doors opening and closing due to increases in staffing and visitors. There are areas of a hospital that do not have to have as great of an air turn over.
