Fast Moving Car Without Acceleration

09/17/2014 1:44 AM

I am using four year young Hyundai santro gls (Petrol engine) and it is in well maintained condition. My car moves relatively fast on black top even in second gear without the help of accelerator pedal push. This is a big problem for me to drive in heavy traffic as my car get very closer to other cars back side which are moving very slowly infront of me. This problem insists me to use brake pedal frequently to reduce the speed to avoid collision in traffic. Due to my curiosity, I drove my friend's Hyundai santro gls car and found no fast moving problem in second gear without acceleration. It moves very very slowly in second gear without acceleration and easy to control in heavy traffic without frequent braking. My friend's car is more than 10 years young. I would like to say that, my car has good pick up in first gear with acceleration compared to my friend's car. What is the problem with my car and how to solve it? Any adjustment required in carburettor (I am not sure new generation petrol models have carburettor or MPFI)? Let me know if you need further information to find a solution. I need some info. before going to meet a mechanic in Hyundai's authorised workshop in my location.

It sounds as though the accelerator pedal cable is sticking, but I can't see it or fiddle with it. Take it to a workshop if you can't do it yourself.

Yeah, there is a possibility of sticky accelerator cable in this kind of situation.I experienced this problem with my former Royal Enfield motor bike. However , I feel now the problem is outside the scope of sticky accelerator cable.

There is a possibility that the timing belt was changed and they failed to unbolt the cruise module so they pulled the jacket out of the threaded nut thus putting excess tension on cable holding the throttle open....you will have to take a razor blade and cut the plastic jacket off the cable so it will sit back in the threaded adjuster thingy to allow the throttle to be in normal position....are you getting any error codes? Have you checked the idle control motor(valve)? Do you have the maintenance and repair history of the car?

Internet auction sites (names withheld) are great for solving problems like this. One simply lists the vehicle with some photos, and in a few days someone shows up with some money, swaps it for the vehicle, and takes the problem away.

Thanks. Okay, now I included 'have' before experienced. Now it looks somewhat okay :-)

by the way, is there any grammatical mistake if i would have used 'had' before experienced ?

It sounds like your in over your head. It would be safer for everybody involved if you spent the extra money and have this repaired by a certified mechanic, then everybody would be safer, both in front and in back of you. Sudden stoppage tends to break things

First off I was referring to me! not a slash at you, just having a little fun.

Second could be-

  1. Throttle position sensor
  2. Idle air motor
  3. Throttle cable
  4. Worn throttle body
  5. Sticking throttle body
  6. Loose throttle body
  7. Loose manifold
  8. Vacuum leak (see number 6&7)
  9. ECM failure
  10. Bad connections on any number of sensor/controls
  11. Floor carpet caught under PETROL pedal
  12. etc.etc.etc

Like I said just having a little fun but the above list is valid.

Good luck!

Nah! had my times on the left coast, too much traffic, too much expense, too much rattling ground and way too much crime. I'll just stick with my little ol town of Pooler.

Has it done this since it was new?

The ECM is likely the reason it's idling so high, but it could be one or more of several things on Wrench twirler's list at #9. A bad sensor or a vacuum leak may be telling the ECM to idle faster.

Start with the simple things. Do a search for techniques on finding vacuum leaks. Have you had the throttle body or injectors cleaned? How clean is your air filter?

Has it done this since it was new?

First two and a half years; I never felt such a problem due to very very low traffic at my location. Adjacent town to my location was not heavily crowded to spot such a problem. I have been living in a heavily crowded city for the last one and half year. Traffic in the city is too hard to handle and suddenly I felt this problem. So, I believe, my car has this problem from the day itself she came out of the dealer's premise.

Have you had the throttle body or injectors cleaned? How clean is your air filter?

Every 10000 Kms, general service is the car company's suggestion. So far, I have followed company's instructions mentioned on the service book without fail. Every 9500 Kms I would change engine oil, fuel filter, air filter etc as general service. Every 20000 Kms, in addition to general service, brake fluid would be changed. Every 30000 Kms, in addition to general service, decarburising of engine, gear oil change and spark plug change would be performed. Right now, I do not have a clear database on cleanliness of throttle body and cleanliness of injector (To be checked with hyundai's mechanic). Air cleaner might be in bit clogged condition as my car has clocked 4000 Kms in speedometer after her last service.

Thanks for pointing out to check vaccum leaks, throttle body cleanliness and injector cleanliness.I will convey this to hyundai mechanic during my car's next service schedule.I think, I can easily manage this problem till next service without much trouble.

Hmm, I wonder what your engine idle speed is supposed to be and what it actually is?

Oops sorry, I forgot. We are supposed to solve your problem remotely with absolutely no more relevant information than what already baffles you.

To remotely solve this I would use one of these.

I have a 2010 Kia Soul. Kia is owned by Hyundai. A major criticism of of both makes of those years were the lousy automatic transmission designs. This included both lousy gear ratios and a tendency to be poor at slowing down without braking.

My Soul takes forever to slow down and I've had the dealer and other owners verify the issue. I haven't checked in a long time but this was a hot topic on the Kia online forums.

More recent model years have improved considerably.
